FAIRFIELD PARK BOARD DISCUSSES GOLF COURSE RESTRICTIONS, POOL REVENUE, AND SPLASH PAD FUNDING

The Fairfield Park Board met last Thursday, with much of the discussion focused on challenges at the Fairfield Golf Course and updates on pool operations.
Officials estimate play at the nine-hole course could be down as much as 50 percent this summer. The decline stems from two main factors: damage to Bermuda grass fairways during the harsh winter and extreme summer heat, which has limited play among older golfers.
The fairways have since been reseeded with Zoysia grass at a cost of about $50,000. Because of the reseeding, play has been restricted and many holes shortened. Park Superintendent Chris Jenkins said the investment should pay off long term, as Zoysia grass is more durable and extends the golf season.
Due to reduced play, golf officials have not been able to make their most recent payment to the Park District to help cover maintenance expenses. Jenkins also noted that the new Zoysia sprigs will require additional aeration to encourage further growth.
On pool operations, officials reported steady admissions, with revenue slightly ahead of last year — $32,000 compared to $30,000.
Board President Jay Fyie added that the district will again apply for grant funding to support the long-planned Splash Pad project. The district currently holds $500,000 in donations earmarked for the project.
