St. Louis Cardinals 8, Miami Marlins 3            The St. Louis Cardinals scored five runs in the final three innings during an 8-3 win over the Miami Marlins at LoanDepot Park. Alec Burleson hit a go-ahead single in the top of the seventh, and Nolan Gorman capped the scoring with a two-run homer in the ninth. Matt Svanson picked up his second win in relief. The Cardinals are in fourth place in the NL Central at 62-and-64. They send Michael McGreevy to the mound against Miami tonight. The St. Louis Cardinals will be without their All-Star infielder for the foreseeable future. The team placed Brendan Donovan on the ten-day injured list yesterday. Donovan is dealing with a groin strain that he suffered on August 8th, but he was able to play through the pain until August 13th. The 28-year-old is hitting .279 with nine home runs and 48 RBI’s this year.

Milwaukee Brewers 7, Chicago Cubs 0 (G1)               The Chicago Cubs managed just two hits during a 7-0 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field. Seiya Suzuki and Owen Caissie each singled in the losing effort. Cade Horton was charged with his fourth loss after surrendering one run on four hits in two-and-two-thirds innings. The Northsiders remain in second place in the NL Central with a 70-and-54 record. Game 2 was postponed, so they have a doubleheader against Milwaukee today.

(Undated) — The second week of the NFL preseason has concluded. The Cincinnati Bengals capped off the week of action with a 31-17 victory over the Washington Commanders on Monday night in Landover. Joe Burrow passed for 62 yards and a touchdown before heading to the sideline. Jake Browning came on to throw for 159 yards and two TDs, while wide receiver Mitchell Tinsley shined with five catches for 73 yards and two spectacular touchdown grabs. For Washington, QB Jayden Daniels rushed one time for a 14-yard score before backup Josh Johnson came in. Week Three of the preseason will kickoff on Thursday when the New England Patriots visit the New York Giants and the Carolina Panthers play host to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

(Miami, FL) — The Dolphins are bolstering their pass rush with a veteran free agent. ESPN reports the team signed Matt Judon on Monday to a one-year deal worth up to six-million dollars. The 33-year-old tallied five-and-a-half sacks and more than 40 tackles for the Falcons last season. Judon is a four-time Pro Bowler and joins a Miami pass rush headlined by Jaelan Phillips, Chop Robinson and Bradley Chubb.

(Foxboro, MA) — The Patriots are willing to make a deal. Executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf said Monday that the team has been talking to all 31 teams about improving their roster. Wolf mentioned that he would consider parting with a future first or second round pick if the right player became available. New England has about 60-million-dollars available in cap space.

(Cleveland, OH) — The Browns are settling on a Number-1 quarterback. The team announced on Monday that Joe Flacco will start Week One against the Bengals. The 40-year-old will also start Cleveland’s preseason finale against the Rams at home on Saturday. Flacco is entering his 18th season and beat out three-year veteran Kenny Pickett along with rookies Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel.

>>Phillies’ Zack Wheeler Has Surgery To Remove Clot

(Philadelphia, PA) — The Phillies will be without their ace for the foreseeable future. Zack Wheeler underwent surgery on Monday for a blood clot in his throwing arm. The team said there’s no timeline for his recovery. The 35-year-old was placed on the 15-day injured list after he felt “heaviness” in his shoulder following a Friday start. Wheeler has a 2.71 ERA in almost 150 innings this season.

(Lubbock, TX) — The Texas Tech Red Raiders will be without a major offensive playmaker this season. Texas Tech sophomore tailback Quinten Joyner will sit out the entire 2025 season after suffering a non-contact knee injury during a team scrimmage last Saturday. Joyner transferred to Texas Tech after spending his true freshman season with USC. He totaled 478 rushing yards on only 63 carries while playing in five games. The Red Raiders are opening the season ranked 24th in the Coaches Poll.

(Columbus, OH) — Ohio State is naming its starting quarterback for the season. The team announced on Monday that Julian Sayin earned the Number-1 job after edging Lincoln Kienholz in a close competition. Head coach Ryan Day said the former Alabama player “separated himself” over the last week with consistent play. The Number-2 Buckeyes battle top-ranked Texas from Columbus to open the season on August 30th.

(Undated) — Two programs from Northern California have named their starting quarterbacks for the upcoming season. Stanford has named Oregon State transfer Ben Gulbranson its starting QB, while Cal is naming true freshman Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele [[ Jaron-Kay-ah-weh Saw-ga-po-loo-teh-lee ]] its starting signal caller. Gulbranson beat out Elijah Brown for the starting job after spending the majority of his five seasons at Oregon State as a backup. He has thrown for 2,648 yards, 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 18 games played. In Berkeley, Sagapolutele beat out Ohio State transfer Devin Brown for the job. He will join Jared Goff as the only freshmen quarterbacks to start a season opener at Cal.

(Auburn, AL) — Auburn football is ready to honor a legend. The Tigers will retire Cam Newton’s number two jersey during their battle against Georgia on October 11th. Newton won the Heisman Trophy in 2010 before leading Auburn to a national championship. He will join Pat Sullivan, Bo Jackson and Terry Beasley as the only Tigers to have their numbers retired.

(South Williamsport, PA) — Another day of the Little League World Series is in the books. Both international games ended with 4-0 final scores with Venezuela beating Japan and Chinese Taipei topping Aruba. On the US side, Nevada walked off South Carolina 1-0 before Connecticut took down South Dakota 13-1. The action in Williamsport continues Tuesday with four more games. In the international bracket, Japan and Mexico will face off before a matchup between Canada and Aruba. In the United States bracket, Hawaii will play South Carolina and Washington will battle South Dakota.
