Illinois has been ranked as having the fourth worst air quality in the nation, according to new research by Opera Beds.

The study analyzed each state’s exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5), one of the most harmful forms of air pollution. Results show Illinois residents are exposed to levels far above the World Health Organization’s safe limit, raising concerns for public health.

California topped the list with the highest pollution exposure in the U.S., followed by Arizona and Nevada. Illinois ranked fourth, with all four states exceeding WHO guidelines by significant margins.

Experts warn that PM2.5 particles are small enough to penetrate deep into the lungs, damaging tissue and increasing risks of asthma, heart disease, stroke, and other respiratory problems. Dr. Carleara Weiss, a sleep scientist, explained that pollution can also disrupt sleep by triggering airway inflammation and worsening conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea.

Health officials advise Illinois residents to take precautions during high pollution days, such as keeping windows closed, using HEPA air purifiers, and checking local air quality reports.
