COOLER, DRIER AIR MASS BRINGS FALL PREVIEW TO REGION

A significant pattern change is set to bring an early taste of fall to the region this week. Unseasonably cool and dry air will settle in, keeping temperatures well below late-August norms.

Highs are expected to struggle to reach the 80-degree mark for much of the week, with most locations topping out in the mid-70s to lower 80s. Overnight lows will be even more notable, dipping into the 50s across the area, with some isolated spots possibly falling into the upper 40s. Forecasters say record lows could be challenged by Wednesday morning.

The cooler weather is being driven by strong high pressure building to the south, placing the region in a northwesterly flow that will also help keep conditions dry. While a couple of weak disturbances may pass through, forecasters say the extensive dry air aloft will likely prevent any meaningful rainfall.

Looking ahead, temperatures should moderate slightly for Labor Day weekend, climbing back into the low to mid-80s. The forecast remains mostly dry, though there could be a chance for rain by Sunday or Monday.
