Republican lawmakers representing Southern Illinois joined with several Chambers of Commerce Thursday for the annual Regional Chamber of Commerce Legislative Summit.
State Senator Terri Bryant, along with State Representatives Dave Severin, Patrick Windhorst, and Paul Jacobs, each delivered updates on issues facing the state and region.
Senator Bryant focused her remarks on rising energy costs and the infiltration of drugs into the Illinois Department of Corrections. She called for increasing energy capacity, repealing policies that closed coal-fired power plants, and addressing safety concerns in correctional facilities.
Rep. Severin also highlighted high electricity bills and discussed legislation he has filed to repeal the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act, as well as measures to explore restoring electricity generation capacity in Illinois.
Rep. Windhorst pointed to economic bright spots in the region, including expansions at SIH, John A. Logan College, and Southeastern Illinois College, while also acknowledging challenges with high taxes and population loss.
Rep. Jacobs warned about new and potential tax increases, saying families continue to face financial pressures from what he called “record-spending budgets.” He cautioned residents to watch for a $1.50 delivery tax proposal that could resurface during the fall veto session.
The annual summit brings together lawmakers and Chambers of Commerce from across southern Illinois to discuss pressing issues impacting businesses, families, and communities.
