Illinois State Police (ISP) Troop 9 Commander Captain Brian Wilson announced the ISP will conduct Alcohol Countermeasure Enforcement (ACE) patrols in Clay, Effingham, Wayne, Edwards, and Hamilton counties throughout this month and next.

The ACE patrols focus on preventing, detecting, and taking enforcement action against impaired driving and violations related to the illegal transportation or consumption of alcohol or drugs. ISP said it maintains a zero-tolerance policy for impaired driving.

Troopers working the detail will be on the lookout for motorists showing signs of impairment, unsafe driving, suspended or revoked licenses, open alcohol violations, improper seat belt and child restraint use, distracted driving, and other Illinois Vehicle Code violations.

Alcohol and drug impairment are estimated to be factors in more than 47% of all fatal motor vehicle crashes in Illinois. Nationally, there is one alcohol-related traffic fatality every 39 minutes. ISP said the ACE program helps officers step up efforts to remove dangerous DUI offenders from the road.

The initiative is funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
