FREE HARVEST PERMITS AVAILABLE FOR ILLINOIS FARMERS

By Mark Wells Sep 2, 2025 | 11:55 AM

Illinois farmers and others involved in hauling agricultural commodities can now access free harvest permits, allowing semi-trucks to exceed legal weight limits by up to 10% on gross, axle, and registered weights during the harvest season.

These permits are valid through the end of the year and can be obtained exclusively through the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) website at webapps.dot.illinois.gov/ITAP. The Illinois Farm Bureau also provides valuable resources, including a comprehensive harvest permit guide, available online at ilfb.org/harvestpermit.

Additionally, route authorizations, which must be updated every 14 days, can also be secured from the IDOT website. These authorizations outline specific travel routes and ensure that no weight limits are posted along those paths. Drivers are required to carry both the route authorization and the state permit, along with form OPER 993, either in paper form or electronically, while operating their vehicles.
