In the early evening hours on Monday, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department received information regarding a possible homicide at an unknown location. Deputies were given details of a suspect vehicle, which they began searching for.
Around 9 p.m., an officer with the Christopher Police Department spotted the vehicle at the intersection of Illinois Highway 14 and Illinois Highway 148. The officer began following the vehicle and requested backup. Deputies from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office assisted with a felony stop in the 9000 block of Birch Road in rural DuQuoin. Units from the DuQuoin Police Department, Perry County Sheriff’s Office, and Illinois State Police also responded.
The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody. A second person, believed to be the victim of homicide, was found deceased inside the vehicle. The scene was secured while Jefferson County detectives and deputies responded. The investigation also led authorities to a Jefferson County residence believed to be the original crime scene. Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services processed both locations.
The Perry County Coroner responded to recover the victim’s body, while the driver was transported to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office for questioning. The Jefferson County State’s Attorney’s Office assisted with search warrants for both scenes.
Officials say the investigation is ongoing, and no further information will be released until the victim’s family has been notified.
