HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL:
Due to the lack of a football officiating crew on Friday, the football game between Carmi and Flora has been moved up to this Thursday, September 4th at 6:30 p.m. at Dancey Field in Flora. Also for the same reason, the football game between Carlyle and Lawrenceville has been moved up to this Thursday, September 4th with kickoff @ 6 PM at Lawrenceville. Due to having a varsity game on Thursday, the freshman game vs. Greenville that was previously scheduled will also be cancelled.

COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL:

The Frontier Community College Bobcats Volleyball team defeated Rend Lake College in four sets on Tuesday night, improving to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in Region 24 play. The Bobcats bounced back after dropping the opening set, defeating the Warriors by scores of 22-25, 25-9, 25-21, 25-19. Rend Lake fell to 2-5 on the season.
Up next, the Bobcats return to action on Thursday, September 4, when they host Lincoln Trail. First serve is set for 6:30pm at Center Street School Gym.

They send Cade Horton to the mound against the Braves tonight.

Ivan Herrera hit his 13th homer of the season on a go-ahead two-run blast in the sixth inning to propel the Cardinals to victory. Starting pitcher Miles Mikolas earned his seventh win after tossing six innings of one-run ball. JoJo Romero recorded his sixth save as St. Louis improved to 69-and-71. The Cardinals send Matthew Liberatore to the mound against the A’s tonight.

>>Report: Buccaneers Extend Luke Goedeke

(Tampa, FL) — The Buccaneers are handing out a hefty contract to a key member of their offensive line. ESPN reports Luke Goedeke signed a four-year, 90-million-dollar extension on Tuesday. The deal includes 50-million in guaranteed money. The right tackle played in more than 40 games for Tampa after being taken in the second round of the 2022 draft. Goedeke also started all four playoff games since arriving.

(Florham Park, NJ) — The Jets are keeping their focus on football. Head coach Aaron Glenn deflected any questions about facing Aaron Rodgers, who was released by the Jets in February. Glenn said that decision has no relevance now, despite Rodgers’ criticism of the move. Current starting quarterback Justin Fields is also doing his best to prepare for Sunday’s season opener against the Steelers. Fields said there’s no storyline about him taking on his former team.

(East Rutherford, NJ) — One day after refusing to name a backup the Giants have listed rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart as the number two signal caller on their unofficial depth chart. Dart is listed ahead of veteran Jameis Winston and behind starter Russell Wilson. Winston had been the number two on the unofficial depth chart throughout the preseason. New York opens the season at the Washington Commanders Sunday afternoon.

(Undated) — There is a new team sitting atop the latest college football coaches poll. Ohio State received 59 first place votes to climb one spot in the rankings. Penn State, Georgia, LSU and Oregon round out the remainder of the top five. Texas dropped five spots to number six, while Florida State is 19th and Oklahoma is 24th after not being ranked. Kansas State and Boise State are the two schools that dropped out of the top 25. Notre Dame dropped four spots from number-five to number nine after a 27-24 loss to Miami, while Illinois stayed at number-12 after a 52-3 rout of Western Illinois.

(Tallahassee, FL) — Florida State is the first school to incur a fine this football season. The university got tagged with a 50-thousand-dollar penalty after fans stormed the field following Saturday’s Week One upset win over Alabama. The ACC released new rules in the offseason designed to protect football and basketball players from field and court storming. A second offense will carry a 100-thousand dollar fine.

(Philadelphia, PA) — The 76ers are getting great news on a young player. Jared McCain said on Tuesday he’s “on pace” to join the team for training camp. The guard is recovering from a torn meniscus he suffered back in December. McCain averaged more than 15 points in 23 games as a rookie last year and started several games due to injuries along the backcourt. Philly begins the preseason in Abu Dhabi next month.

(Undated) — The NHL is bringing a big change to the postseason. According to ESPN, the NHL and NHLPA have agreed to expedite a playoff salary cap and changes to long-term injured reserve rules for the upcoming season. By 3PM local time, or five hours before a playoff game, teams will have to submit a roster of 18 players and two goaltenders to NHL Central Registry that must be under the “upper limit” of the salary cap for that team.

>>Caitlin Clark Not Cleared For Contact

(Undated) — The Fever are still waiting for their star player to get healthy. Caitlin Clark is still not cleared for contact drills, but did participate in the team’s full-court, 5-on-0 work during shoot around Tuesday morning. Head coach Stephanie White said that Clark has been limited to shooting drills and individual work. Clark has been out since June 15th with a right groin injury.

(Queens, NY) — The quarterfinals at the US Open got underway Tuesday. Second-seeded Carlos Alcaraz cruised to a win over 20th-seeded Jiri Lehecka in straight sets to lock up his spot in the semifinals. In other men’s action, seventh-seeded Novak Djokovic claimed a four-set win over fourth-seeded American Taylor Fritz to advance. On the women’s side, fourth-seeded American Jessica Pegula swept her matchup against Barbora Krejcikova, while top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka moved on after her opponent Marketa Vondroušová was forced to withdraw after suffering an injury during practice. The quarterfinals continue Wednesday.
