A Louisville man is behind bars after deputies recovered nearly 30 firearms during an investigation into a theft earlier this week.

On Monday around 10 a.m., the Clay County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a theft involving property that included two firearms. Later that afternoon, at approximately 4:15 p.m., a deputy on routine patrol spotted the suspect driving north on Main Street in Clay City. The vehicle was stopped in a driveway on North 1st SE Street, and the driver was taken into custody without incident.

Deputies searched the vehicle and found spent ammunition casings, ammunition, a loaded magazine, and drug paraphernalia. The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Michael A. Phillips of Louisville, was transported to the Clay County Jail.

As part of the investigation, law enforcement conducted searches at multiple residences with assistance from the Clay County Probation Office. Officers ultimately seized 27 firearms and several rounds of ammunition.

Phillips, who has a prior felony conviction, was charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Felon. He appeared in Clay County Court Wednesday, where a judge denied him pretrial release. He remains incarcerated at the Clay County Jail.
