A Jefferson County man accused of fatally shooting his wife during a domestic dispute earlier this week will appear in court next Wednesday.

Court records show a preliminary hearing and motion hearing for 51-year-old John W. Finney of Mt. Vernon are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday in Jefferson County Court.

Finney appeared for his detention hearing Wednesday, where he was given an In Absentia warning. A public defender was appointed, and he was advised of the state’s petition to deny him pre-trial release. That petition will also be considered next week.

According to investigators, law enforcement tracked Finney’s Ford Escape into rural Du Quoin Monday night, where he was stopped in the 9000 block of Birch Road. Inside the vehicle, officers found his wife, 42-year-old Amy J. Finney, dead.

Finney has been formally charged with first-degree murder and remains held in the Jefferson County Jail.
