The U.S. Geological Survey has confirmed a small earthquake near Grayville early this (Thursday) morning.
The magnitude 2.1 tremor struck at 4:12 a.m., with the epicenter located about five miles west-northwest of Grayville. Officials say the quake originated at a depth of approximately 24 kilometers.
The last quake in the region occurred on March 30th, when a magnitude 2.4 earthquake was recorded northeast of Mt. Carmel.
The most significant quake in recent history for the area was on April 18th, 2008, when a magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck near Mt. Carmel along the Wabash Valley Fault. That quake caused minor structural damage as far away as St. Louis.
