The Edwards County Farm Bureau Young Leaders and Bungee in Browns conducted the 18th annual Edwards County corn yield survey on Thursday. The results show an estimated county average of 171.3 bushels per acre. Ellery led the results with 200.7 bushels per acre, while Shelby recorded the lowest at 151.0 bushels per acre. Rebecca Perry, FBCM of Edwards County, noted “consistent variability” in this year’s yields, citing significant differences in ear length, pollination, and kernel quality. Surveyors also reported issues with tar spot, rust, and wildlife damage.

The survey involved sampling six fields from each township and eight from Shelby due to its size, totaling 50 fields. Samples were based on 85,000 kernels per bushel, with peak harvest expected in mid-October. Township averages are listed below:

Albion: 166.8 bushels per acre
Bone Gap: 160.63 bushels per acre
Browns: 155.38 bushels per acre
Dixon: 192.3 bushels per acre
Ellery: 200.7 bushels per acre
French Creek: 184.3 bushels per acre
Salem: 159.5 bushels per acre
Shelby: 151.0 bushels per acre

The survey highlights the diverse agricultural conditions across the county.
