On Saturday Night, the FCHS Mules and the Red Hill Salukis met up for the first time since 2000, when Red Hill left the old North Egypt Conference. It was a hard-fought battle between the teams, with back-and-forth scoring and several highlight reel plays. The most notable of these was a 63-yard run by Michael Barner down to the 1-yard line in the final minute of the first half. Cooper Berg then punched the ball into the endzone to give the Mules a 2-point lead going into halftime.
Barner followed that up with a 53-yard touchdown run on the Mules first possession of the 2nd half. The game would eventually reach the end of regulation in a 28-28 tie, forcing overtime. The Mules had the ball first in overtime and scored on a 10-yard pass from Jude Carter to Lane Robson. The Mules were able to stop the Salukis on the next possession to seal the game.
The Mules offense was led by Michael Barner with 17 carries for 181 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Mules defense was led by Will Lewis with 8 tackles. The Mules are now 2-0 on the season and will travel to Eldorado Friday night. The Salukis fall to 1-1 on the season.

SATURDAY HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL SCORES:
The Fairfield Lady Mules volleyball team turned in a strong performance at the Olney Tournament on Saturday, finishing 4-1 and in a three-way tie for first place with St. Anthony and Edwards County, each posting 2-1 records in bracket play. In pool play, Fairfield defeated Tolono Unity 25-20, 25-21, and outlasted Newton 25-27, 25-23, 15-11.
In bracket action, the Lady Mules topped Edwards County 25-21, 8-25, 15-11, fell to St. Anthony 22-25, 20-25, and closed with a win over Hinsdale 25-20, 25-23. With the results, Fairfield improves to 9-2 on the season. Jensyn Robbins was named to the all-tournament team. Also, Grace Bishop & Grace McCarty from Edwards Co. were both named to the all-tournament team.
The Wayne City Lady Indians Volleyball team competed in a tri-match with Sparta and St. Elmo. In the first game, Wayne City beat Sparta in 2 sets. In the second game, Wayne City beat St. Elmo in 2 sets

The FCHS Cross Country Team competed in the Charleston Invite on Saturday. The Lady Mules finished 9th out of 18 teams with Emeri Sager (43rd) and Adi Hickey (50th) placing in the top 50 (177 runners total.) The Boys Cross Country team finished 12th out of 22 teams with Ashton King (45th) placing in the top 50 (243 runners total.)

The Bobcats wrapped up play at the ECC Falcon Classic with a 3-1 record, improving to 8-4 overall. Up next, Bobcats Volleyball will travel to face the Kaskaskia College Blue Angels in Centralia on Wednesday.

Carson Kelly hit two home runs in the losing effort, while Daniel Palencia was charged with his sixth loss in relief. The Northsiders remain in second place in the NL Central at 81-and-62. Shota Imanaga starts for the Cubs against Atlanta tonight.

Illini Pull Away From Duke
(Durham, NC) — The number-nine Illinois Fighting Illini remain undefeated following a 45-19 win over the Duke Blue Devils at Wallace Wade Stadium on Saturday. The Illini outscored Duke 31-6 in the second half. Luke Altmyer passed for 296 yards and three touchdowns in the victory, while Hank Beatty caught eight passes for 128 yards. Three more ranked teams were beaten, as Arizona State fell to Mississippi State 24-20 in Starkville, South Florida beat Florida 18-16 in The Swamp, and Baylor outlasted SMU 48-45 in double overtime in Dallas. ASU dropped from 10th to 24th in the rankings, while the Gators and SMU both fell out of the Top-25 following their losses. The top five teams in the country all held serve, as Ohio State blew out Grambling 70-0, Penn State beat FIU 34-0, LSU took down Louisiana Tech 23-7, Georgia outlasted Austin Peay 28-6 and Oregon steamrolled Oklahoma State 69-3.

Florida and SMU are the two teams that dropped out of the top 25.

(Sarasota, FL) — Former New York Mets manager Davey Johnson has died at 82 years old. His wife told the Mets’ longtime public relations representative that he died Friday night in a hospital in Sarasota, Florida, following a long illness. Johnson played 13 seasons and won two World Series titles with the Baltimore Orioles. He served as a manager for 17 seasons with several franchises, including the Mets and their 1986 World Series championship season. Johnson was also known for his early embrace of analytics and led the Washington Nationals to their first playoff appearance in 2012.

(Springfield, MA) — The Class of 2025 was enshrined into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame on Saturday. Anthony and Howard were also inducted as members of the gold-medal-winning 2008 Team USA men’s basketball team. The squad that came to be known as the “Redeem Team” also included LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Kobe Bryant.

(Queens, NY) — The US Open wrapped up over the weekend with a pair of former tournament champions taking home the crown. Second-seeded Carlos Alcaraz toppled top-seeded Jannik Sinner in four sets to claim his second US Open title and sixth Grand Slam championship. Alcaraz won the US Open and French Open this year and will aim to complete his career Grand Slam at the Australian Open in January. On the women’s side, Aryna Sabalenka claimed her second straight US Open title by defeating eighth-seeded American Amanda Anisimova in straight sets on Saturday. Sabalenka became the first woman to claim consecutive US Open titles since Serena Williams did it three straight times from 2012-to-2014. She is now a four-time Grand Slam champion.

Chase Briscoe, Chase Elliott, Ryan Blaney and Joey Logano rounded out the top-five finishers. The Round of 16 concludes next Saturday at Bristol. Four drivers will be eliminated after the race.
