It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Scott Edward McGuire, who died on August 12, 2025, at the age of 57 at his home in Albion, Illinois. Scott was born at Fairfield Memorial Hospital on November 7, 1967, and lived in Mt. Vernon and Ellery, IL, throughout his childhood.
After graduating from Edwards County Senior High School at the age of 17, he could not wait to serve his country and proudly enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. While on active duty with the Marine Corps from 1985-1989, Scott was stationed in Camp Pendleton, California, and Okinawa, Japan. Following his service in the Marine Corps, he returned to Ellery. Shortly thereafter, Scott again proudly served his country by enlisting in the United States Coast Guard, serving at US Coast Guard Station Manistee, Michigan, and aboard US Coast Guard Cutter Munro (WHEC-724). Following his Coast Guard service from 1992-1996, he returned to and resided in Edwards County because it was home to him and he was happiest there. Scott worked 28 years, mostly as a supervisor, in the Walmart Distribution Center in Olney, Illinois. He loved his job and the people he worked with, especially the members of his team.
Even more important to Scott than his love of his country and his dedication to his work was his family. He cherished, loved, and was committed to his family, the driving force for everything he did.
Scott is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Debra (Stromitis); their two daughters, Cassidy McGuire of North Platte, Nebraska, and Rhiannon McGuire of Albion, and his two beloved pets, Marley and Squeakers. He is also survived by his sister, Tracy (McGuire) McGuire-Rossetti of Silver Spring, Maryland; his father, Darrel Buckles of Grayville; and three brothers, Keith Buckles of Boonville, Indiana; Joe Buckles of Albion: and Darek Buckles of Henderson, Kentucky. He is also survived by his best friend, Michael Stineman of Corpus Christi, Texas, with whom Scott served in the US Coast Guard and who Scott considered his brother.
Scott was preceded in death by his mother, Karen (Pettigrew) McGuire; father, Edward McGuire; maternal grandparents, James and Eva Grace Pettigrew; and paternal grandparents, Harry and Doris McGuire.
A service celebrating Scott’s life will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 13, 2025, in the chapel at Roberts and Cook Funeral Service, 221 North First Street, Grayville, IL. Family and friends may visit from 1:00 p.m. until time of service. A time of fellowship will continue after the service at Ellery Christian Church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Scott’s memory may be made to Debra McGuire, to assist Scott’s family, and will be accepted at Roberts and Cook Funeral Service, who has been entrusted with the arrangements.
