Hot and Dry WX

The southeastern Illinois region remains in hot and dry conditions, which are expected to continue for several more days, according to the National Weather Service in Paducah, Kentucky.  High temperatures are expected to be in the low to mid 90s the next several days.  While small chances of rain are in the forecast tonight and early Sunday, no significant rain is expected in the region anytime soon.

The latest U.S. Drought Monitor Map, released Thursday, shows Wayne County is in Moderate Drought conditions, along with most of southern Illinois.  Areas to the west of Wayne County are now in a Severe Drought.  These conditions are only expected to worsen with the continued dry weather.  Burn bans are in effect for several area counties as a result of the dry weather, including Clay, Hamilton and Lawrence counties.  The extended weather forecasts favor above normal temperatures and near-normal precipitation, running through September 26th.

As far as area rivers this morning, they are quite low.  The Little Wabash River east of Fairfield is at 4.12 feet.  Flood stage is 17 feet.  At Clay City the stage is 3.83 feet.  Flood stage is 18 feet.  At Carmi the stage is 3.04 feet.  Flood stage is 27 feet.  The Skillet Fork at Wayne City is at 4.9 feet.  Flood stage is 15 feet.  The Wabash River at Mt. Carmel is at 2.72 feet.  Flood stage is 19 feet.  Bonpas Creek at Browns is at 1.17 feet.
