The National Athletic Hall of Fame has announced the induction of Jim Maroon, Ted Knapp, and Terry Chapman (posthumously) into the Officials Category as part of the Hall of Fame Class of 2025. The Hall of Fame recognizes these three officials for their exemplary service, professionalism, and dedication.

Jim Maroon began his IHSA officiating career in boys’ basketball during the 1960s and later expanded into girls’ basketball. Over more than 30 years, Maroon officiated countless conference tournaments, numerous IHSA regional and sectional contests, two IHSA State Tournament games, and the IBCA All-Star Game. His dedication and integrity left a lasting impact on Illinois high school basketball.

Ted Knapp of Mt. Vernon launched his IHSA officiating career in 1970 and has served for an impressive 56 years across multiple sports. His experience includes 56 years in basketball, six years in baseball, 46 years in football, and 42 years in softball. Knapp is also recognized as a Certified Clinician in basketball, football, and softball, where he has mentored and trained countless fellow officials.

Former Fairfield resident, Terry Chapman devoted 43 years to IHSA athletics, beginning in 1982. A certified boys’ and girls’ basketball official, Chapman worked across Class 1A, 2A, and 3A levels, with 17 years of postseason assignments that included multiple IHSA State Tournaments. Chapman also served as a registered volleyball official for 17 years and a football official for two years, demonstrating his broad commitment to high school athletics. Chapman unexpectedly passed away recently.
