A Flora man is behind bars following a shooting investigation that began in the early morning hours Tuesday.

Around 3:40 a.m., the Clay County Sheriff’s Office received reports of an individual firing shots at vehicles passing his residence. Deputies later learned the incident stemmed from a domestic altercation, during which the suspect allegedly held a gun to the victim’s head.

Working with Clay County State’s Attorney Phillip Givens, investigators obtained search and arrest warrants for the suspect. The warrants were executed later that morning at a residence in Songer Township with assistance from ILEAS WMD/SIRT Region 9 and 11. Officers seized three firearms, several rounds of ammunition, and additional evidence, though the suspect had fled before law enforcement arrived.

Deputies and assisting agencies continued searching throughout the day. Wednesday morning at approximately 11:25 a.m., a tip led officers to the suspect, who was spotted driving westbound on Old Hwy. 50 near Country Club Road. The vehicle accelerated as deputies attempted a stop, but soon pulled into a family member’s driveway, where the suspect was taken into custody without further incident.

The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Scott E. Tolliver of Flora, faces charges of Domestic Battery under a Clay County warrant and has additionally been cited for Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, Aggravated Assault, and Reckless Discharge of a Firearm. Tolliver was booked into the Clay County Jail.
