Still Dry But Rain Predicted

The southern Illinois area has been under drought conditions for a couple of weeks now.  The latest U.S. Drought Monitor Map, released Thursday, now shows western Wayne County and areas to the south and west in Severe Drought conditions.  The rest of southern and central Illinois is in Moderate Drought conditions.  Far southeast Missouri is now in an Extreme Drought.

Rain chances are now in the forecast daily today through this coming Friday, which could put a dent in the drought conditions in the region.  The extended forecasts are calling for above normal temperatures for both the six to ten day and 8 to 14 day outlooks, running through October 3rd.  Below normal precipitation is expected in the six to ten day outlook, and near normal precip in the 8 to 14 day outlook.  The 30-day outlook, released Thursday, also favors above normal temperatures and below normal precipitation for the month of October.

Area river stages as of this morning include the Little Wabash River east of Fairfield at 4.14 feet.  Flood stage is 17 feet.  At Clay City the stage is 3.82 feet.  Flood stage is 18 feet.  At Carmi the river is at 2.98 feet.  Flood stage is 27 feet.  The Skillet Fork at Wayne City is at 4.83 feet.  Flood stage is 15 feet.   The Wabash River at Mt. Carmel is at 2.62 feet.  Flood stage is 19 feet.  Bonpas Creek at Browns is at 1.25 feet.
