Local youth and families recently gathered for the “Goats: Managing, Breeding, and Showing with Success” workshop, hosted by Wayne County 4-H and the Illinois Meat Goat Producers. The event provided valuable instruction from industry experts on all aspects of raising, breeding, and showing Boer goats. The workshop began on Saturday, September 13th with presentations on goat nutrition, selecting and breeding show goats, and advances in reproductive technology. Representatives from the American Boer Goat Association shared updates on resources, upcoming shows, and their junior association.
Attendees also learned what essentials to keep in a goat showbox and watched a live demonstration on fitting and grooming a goat for the show ring, including techniques for preparing a goat’s legs.
“This clinic aimed to strengthen the skills of both new and experienced producers,” said Mackenzie Pruett, Illinois Meat Goat Producers board member. “We were thrilled with the turnout and look forward to supporting the meat goat industry in Illinois.”
Wayne County 4-H expressed gratitude to Lowe’s Pellets & Grain, Hoosier Embryo, Boers by Hobby, the American Boer Goat Association, Mackenzie Pruett, Catherine Riley, the Illinois Meat Goat Producers, Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and the Wayne County Fairgrounds for their support and contributions to the workshop.
