For the past 17 years, Tech Fest has inspired and challenged students across Wayne County. This year, 193 fifth graders from Cisne Middle School, Center Street Middle School, New Hope School, Jasper Elementary School, Wayne City Grade School, and Geff Elementary School participated in the annual 4-H program.
The event began with a presentation by Brian Koontz, who introduced students to Elastec—a Carmi, Illinois-based manufacturer specializing in innovative environmental products. Afterward, students cycled through four engaging, hands-on activities: programming LEGO robots to navigate a custom maze; constructing roller coasters with foam noodles, tape, and marbles; designing and testing boats for strength and speed using limited materials; and building and launching their own hand-crafted rockets.
“Tech Fest is a fantastic opportunity for the youth of Wayne County to engage with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through hands-on learning,” said 4-H Educator Samantha Gaither. “This event not only fosters problem-solving skills but also helps young participants develop teamwork and social skills essential for future success.”
Tech Fest is an annual school program coordinated by Wayne County 4-H.
