On Tuesday, cyclists began the ninth annual Gold Star 500, a 500-mile bicycle journey honoring Illinois military service members who made the ultimate sacrifice. The ride started in Springfield and will pass through communities including Gibson City, Paris, Flora, and Pinckneyville before concluding in Litchfield.

This volunteer-led event preserves the legacy of fallen heroes through scholarships and Fallen Hero History Project videos. More than 95% of funds raised go directly toward these efforts. Funding comes from rider registration, corporate and business sponsorships, grants, and generous donations.

Riders are expected to arrive in Flora this (Thursday) afternoon around 4:15 p.m., staying overnight at Oil Belt Christian Service Camp. They will depart tomorrow (Friday) morning at 7 a.m. for Cisne with a stop, then onto Pinckneyville. On Saturday, the group will leave Pinckneyville and ride to Litchfield.
