Nearly 200,000 BMW vehicles are being recalled across the United States due to a fire risk linked to a potential short circuit in their starter motors, according to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The recall affects a wide range of BMW models, including the 2019 through 2021 BMW 330i, and the 2019 through 2022 BMW Z4, 530i, X3, X4, 430i, and 430i Convertible vehicles. The 2022 BMW 230i is also included in the recall. In addition, certain Toyota Supra models from the 2021 and 2022 model years are affected due to shared components developed through a joint partnership between BMW and Toyota.

Officials warn that a defect in the starter motor may cause a short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire. This risk exists even when the vehicle is parked and turned off.

BMW and Toyota will notify affected owners by mail with instructions. Dealerships will inspect and, if necessary, replace the starter motor at no cost to the vehicle owner.
