AREA SPORTS RESULTS FROM THE WEEKEND:

HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY
The FCHS Cross Country team competed in the Lawrenceville Invitational on Saturday. The FCHS Girls Team finished 2nd overall with 5 runners finishing in the top-10, Emeri Sager-5th, Adi Hickey-6th, Jaycie Couch-7th, Ellanie Vanway-8th, and Brianna Meeks-9th. The FCHS Boys Team finished 1st and was led by Ashton King who finished 1st. Other top-10 finishers were Skylar Bladel-4th, Kanyen Lingafeler-7th, Jarret Vaughan-8th, and Treyton Lewis-9th.

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS TENNIS:
The FCHS Girls Tennis team traveled to Mt. Vernon Friday for a 4-way Doubles Meet with Mt. Vernon, Salem, and Marion. Salem won the meet with 9 victories while Fairfield picked up 3 wins from the teams of Mabrey Foster & Wren Braddock, Marlee Richards & Kenry Hutchcraft, and Malia Austin & Carly Fleener.

——-The St. Louis Cardinals had just six hits in a 2-0 loss to the Chicago Cubs in their season finale from Wrigley Field. John King was charged with his first loss in relief after giving up the first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth. St. Louis ended the year in fourth place in the NL Central with a 78-and-84 record. Javier Assad earned his fourth win after holding the Cardinals to three hits in five-and-a-third scoreless innings. Seiya Suzuki hit his 32nd home run in the victory. The Cubs finished the season with a 92-and-70 record, and they’ll host the San Diego Padres in Game One of the National League Wild Card Series tomorrow.

NHL NEWS:
The St. Louis Blues are locking down one of their top defensemen. The Blues inked blue-liner Cam Fowler to a three-year deal worth 18-point-three million dollars over the weekend. The contract keeps Fowler in St. Louis through the 2028-29 campaign. The 33-year-old came to the Blues in the middle of last season. He had nine goals and 27 assists in 51 games with the team. In other team news, St. Louis lost a preseason game to Chicago 4-2 on Saturday.

(Undated) — A pair of teams are still undefeated after four weeks of the NFL regular season. The Eagles edged the Buccaneers and the Bills crushed the Saints to reach 4-and-0. The Sunday slate kicked off with the Steelers taking down the Vikings from Dublin. The nightcap featured a thrilling, 40-40 tie between the Packers and Cowboys from Arlington. Meanwhile, Monday Night Football showcases a doubleheader between the Jets and Dolphins from Miami along with the Bengals and Broncos from Denver.

(East Rutherford, NJ) — The Giants suffered a major loss on the day they picked up their first win of the season. According to ESPN, the G-Men fear that wide receiver Malik Nabers has a torn ACL. Nabers was injured after trying to catch a deep ball in the first half of New York’s win over the Chargers. He was carted off the field and did not return, and will undergo an MRI on Monday to confirm the nature of the injury.

(Santa Clara, CA) — Bad Bunny is set to headline the 2026 Super Bowl halftime show. He made the announcement Sunday night, saying in a statement that it was for “those who came before me and ran countless yards so I could come in and score a touchdown.” Super Bowl 60 will take place February 8th at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, home of the San Francisco 49ers.

(Undated) — The MLB postseason is set to begin this week. The Wild Card round will begin Tuesday with four matchups between some of baseball’s top teams. In the American League Wild Card round, the Boston Red Sox will battle the rival New York Yankees while the Cleveland Guardians take on the Detroit Tigers. In the National League, the Chicago Cubs face the San Diego Padres while the Los Angeles Dodgers play the Cincinnati Reds. The Toronto Blue Jays and Seattle Mariners are awaiting their opponents for the ALDS, with the Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers awaiting theirs for the NLDS. The Divisional Series will begin Saturday.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL SATURDAY:

The number-22 Illinois Fighting Illini came through in the clutch during a 34-32 win over the USC Trojans at Memorial Stadium on Saturday. David Olano hit a 41-yard field goal as time expired to give Illinois the victory. Luke Altmyer passed for 328 yards and two touchdowns in the victory. He also scored a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown. The Illini improved to 1-and-1 in Big Ten play and 4-and-1 overall. They visit Purdue this Saturday.

(Undated) — It was a wild weekend in college football, as six ranked teams lost. On Friday, Virginia beat formerly number eight Florida State 46-38 at home in overtime and Arizona State beat number 25 TCU 27-24 in Tempe. Then, on Saturday, number five Oregon beat second-ranked Penn State 30-24 in double overtime, fourth-ranked LSU lost to number 13 Ole Miss 24-19, number 16 Alabama knocked off number three Georgia 24-21.  Two more ranked teams survived overtime scares, as well, with number 15 Tennessee beating Mississippi State 41-34 on the road and 17th-ranked Georgia Tech topping Wake Forest 30-29.

>>Week Six College Football Coaches Poll

(Undated) — There have been some changes at the top of the latest college football coaches poll. Ohio State is once again leading the nation. Oregon, Miami, Ole Miss and Texas A and M round out the remainder of the top five. Alabama jumped five spots to number 11 while Florida State slipped 11 spots to number 19. Arizona State is 24th and Utah is 25th after not being ranked in last week’s poll. USC and TCU were the two schools that dropped out of the top 25.

>>Mercury Advance To WNBA Finals

(Phoenix, AZ) — The Phoenix Mercury are headed back to the WNBA Finals for the first time since 2021. The Mercury knocked out the top-seeded Minnesota Lynx with an 86-81 win in Game Four of their semifinal series in Phoenix. Alyssa Thomas racked up 23 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds to lead the Mercury, who will be searching for their first title since 2014. Phoenix will host either the Aces or Fever in the WNBA Finals. Las Vegas and Indiana are currently tied at two games apiece with Game Five of their semifinal series set for Tuesday in Sin City.

>>Team Europe Wins 2025 Ryder Cup

(Farmingdale, NY) — Team Europe claimed the 2025 Ryder Cup after topping Team USA 14-11 at Bethpage Black. Ludvig Aberg topped Patrick Cantlay, and Shane Lowry picked up the half point against Russell Henley to clinch the victory for Europe. The Europeans are the first team to win an away Ryder Cup since coming away with the title on US soil back in 2012.

>>Chase Elliott Wins Kansas In Overtime

(Kansas City, KS) — Chase Elliott is heading to the next round of the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs following a win at Kansas Speedway. The driver of the Number-9 car held off Denny Hamlin in double-overtime to take home the checkered flag in the Hollywood Casino 400. Christopher Bell, Chase Briscoe and Bubba Wallace rounded out the top-five finishers. The Round of 12 concludes at Charlotte Motor Speedway next Sunday.
