More than 25 cyclists rode through Fairfield on Friday morning as part of a four-day, 500-mile journey to honor fallen soldiers through the Gold Star Mission. The group, traveling from Springfield to Litchfield, paused at the Fairfield VFW to rest and hold a brief ceremony before resuming their route to Pinckneyville.
Since its founding in Springfield in 2017, the Gold Star Mission has organized 54 events and awarded $317,000 in scholarships to preserve the memory of those lost in service to their country. Collectively, participating cyclists have pedaled enough miles to circle the globe nearly six times.
The nonprofit is currently offering an open $1,000 scholarship for higher education, available for any educational expenses. Applications open November 1, 2025, and close February 1, 2026.
Friday’s Fairfield stop began at the corner of 2nd and Court streets, where the riders were escorted out of town by members of the Illinois State Police motorcycle patrol division.
Event organizers encourage the public to volunteer and support their efforts. More information, including details on scholarships and volunteer opportunities, can be found at goldstarmission.org.
