By Mark Wells Sep 30, 2025 | 11:55 AM

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is now hiring 161 seasonal positions to assist with snow and ice removal in Alexander, Franklin, Hardin, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Massac, Perry, Saline, Union, White, and Williamson counties. Interested applicants must apply online at illinois.jobs2web.com.

Both full-time winter highway maintainers and hourly positions, commonly referred to as “snowbirds,” are available. Employees will help maintain more than 45,000 lane miles statewide during the winter months, responding promptly to snow and ice events and working as needed, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Full-time positions start at $6,044 per month, while hourly workers earn $27.79 per hour.

Applicants must have a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) and an email address, and will be required to pass a criminal background check, pre-employment physical, vision test, and drug and alcohol screening. Veterans are encouraged to apply, as a new law provides preference for these seasonal positions.

Applicants will be selected based on availability, experience, and qualifications. For more information about the application process, available positions, pay details, and benefits, visit the IDOT jobs website.
