A pre-trial hearing is set for next Thursday in Jefferson County Court for 51-year-old John W. Finney of Mt. Vernon, who is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of his wife, 42-year-old Amy J. Finney.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred during a domestic dispute at the couple’s home on North Illinois 148 in rural Mt. Vernon on Sunday, August 31st. Authorities received a call reporting a possible homicide just after 8 p.m. on Labor Day night.
Deputies began searching for a Ford Escape believed to be involved in the incident. The vehicle, driven by John Finney, was later spotted by Christopher Police on Illinois 148. Law enforcement followed the vehicle and deputies conducted a traffic stop on Birch Road in rural Du Quoin. Finney was detained at the scene, and his wife was found dead inside the vehicle.
John W. Finney is currently being held in the Jefferson County Jail pending further court proceedings.
