AREA SPORTS RESULTS FROM WEDNESDAY:
HIGH SCHOOL GOLF
On Wednesday, the FCHS Boys Golf Team traveled to Green Hills Country Club in Mt. Vernon for the IHSA Class 1A Regionals. Fairfield finished 9th out of 15 teams and was led by Cruz Wells who finished 21st and River Wise who finished 26th. Cisne’s Hagen Howard and Edwards County’s Walker Sledge finished tied for 8th and both now advance to the Class 1A Sectional at Effingham.

JR HIGH CROSS COUNTRY
On Wednesday, the Fairfield Colts Cross Country Team competed at the Benton Invitational Cross Country Meet. For the JV Girls team, Addison Lawyer-13th and Chloe Esmon-14th, both finished as Medalists.

The Chicago Cubs had just four hits during a 3-0 loss to the San Diego Padres in Game Two of the National League Wild Card Series from Wrigley Field. The Cubs gave up a run in the top of the first and trailed the rest of the way. Andrew Kittredge was charged with the loss after allowing a run on two hits in just one inning. The Cubs send Jameson Taillon to the mound in a winner-take-all Game Three at 4:08pm this afternoon.

The St. Louis Blues go for their first win of the preseason when they host the Ottawa Senators at Enterprise Center tonight. The Blues are coming off a 5-3 loss to the Dallas Stars at home on Tuesday. St. Louis is 0-3-and-1 in exhibition play this year. Tonight’s game gets underway at 7:00PM.

(Indianapolis, IN) — A member of the Colts’ secondary is calling it a career just four games into the season. Indianapolis cornerback Xavien [[ ex-ZAY-vee-en ]] Howard has abruptly announced his retirement one month into the 2025 campaign. The four-time Pro Bowler signed with the Colts in August after one year away from the NFL. The 32-year-old said in a social media post that he is no longer willing to put football before his family just days after a disappointing performance against the Los Angeles Rams and star wideout Puka Nacua [[ POO-kah nah-KOO-ah ]]. Howard started 103 games during his career and led the league in interceptions twice. He finishes the season with 11 total tackles and one fumble recovery.

(Cleveland, OH) — The Browns are making a change at quarterback. The team announced on Wednesday that Dillon Gabriel is taking over for Joe Flacco, who will serve as the backup. Gabriel was selected in the third round of April’s draft while the team doubled-up rookie gunslingers by taking Shedeur Sanders in round five. The son of Deion will remain the third-string quarterback.

(Undated) — Only one team has completed a two-game sweep of their opponent in the Wild Card Series round. The Los Angeles Dodgers are advancing to the NLDS after taking down the Cincinnati Reds 8-4 in Game Two. Mookie Betts had four hits and three RBIs to help LA advance to take on the Philadelphia Phillies in a series that begins Saturday. In the National League’s other Wild Card Series, Manny Machado and the San Diego Padres shut out the Chicago Cubs 3-0 to force a decisive Game Three in the Windy City. In the American League, Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees kept their season alive with a 4-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox in the Bronx. Elsewhere, Bo Naylor and the Cleveland Guardians toppled the AL Central rival Detroit Tigers 6-1 to force a win-or-go-home contest on Thursday.

(Atlanta, GA) — The Braves need a new manager. Brian Snitker won’t return at the helm next season. The team announced on Wednesday that the 69-year-old will move to an advisory role. Atlanta missed the playoffs this season, but Snitker helped guide the team to a 2021 World Series title. He’s been with the organization for almost 50 years.

(Undated) — A former first-overall pick is hanging up his skates. Longtime defenseman Erik Johnson has announced his retirement as a member of the Colorado Avalanche following a 17-season career. Johnson was selected by the St. Louis Blues with the top pick in the 2006 NHL Draft and was traded away to Colorado in a blockbuster deal in 2011. He was a member of the Avs for 14 seasons and was a member of the Stanley Cup title team in 2022. The 37-year-old concludes his career with 95 goals, 253 assists, 1,717 blocks and 1,695 hits. He played in 1,023 games split between the Avs, Blues, Buffalo Sabres and Philadelphia Flyers.

(Undated) — The Devils locked up their young defender on Wednesday. General manager Tom Fitzgerald announced the team has agreed to terms with defenseman Luke Hughes on a seven-year contract worth 63-million-dollars. He will count nine-million-dollars against the salary cap through the 2031-32 season. Hughes has recorded 93 points in 155 career regular season games.

(Abu Dhabi, UAE) — Basketball is back. The NBA preseason tips off in Abu Dhabi between the 76ers and the Knicks on Thursday. The sides stay in the United Arab Emirates capital to square off again on Saturday. Another matchup on foreign soil takes place overnight when the Pelicans battle Melbourne United in Australia. The first game stateside features the Lakers and Suns clashing in Palm Springs.

(Las Vegas, NV) — The WNBA Finals will begin this week. The number two seed Las Vegas Aces will face off with the fourth-seeded Phoenix Mercury. Game one of the series will be played Friday night in Sin City. For Vegas, it’s the third appearance in the Finals in the past four seasons. The Aces won titles in those two appearances in 2022 and 2023. Phoenix is making its first trip to the championship series since 2021, when it lost to the Chicago Sky. During the regular season, the Aces won three of their four matchups with the Mercury, including both road games.

(Jackson, MS) — Kevin Yu will be looking to defend his crown when the Sanderson Farms Championship tees off from the Country Club of Jackson. Yu won last year’s tournament after beating Beau Hossler in a playoff. He will be alongside Tom Kim and Tom Hoge for the first and second rounds. Patrick Fishburn, Chan Kim and Mac Meissner will be among the first group teeing off round one.
