Nearly a year after Judge Denton Aud rejected his bid to withdraw a guilty plea in the 2021 killing of Wayne County Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Riley, convicted murderer Ray Tate has now taken his case to the Fifth District Appellate Court in Mt. Vernon.
Tate is also appealing in Clinton County, where he was captured after the deputy’s murder. On October 16, 2023, Tate pleaded guilty to kidnapping and home invasion charges tied to his arrest, receiving a 30-year prison sentence. Less than a month later, he sought to withdraw that plea and vacate the sentence.
In the past year, Tate has dismissed two defense attorneys and is now representing himself. His next hearing in the Clinton County case is scheduled via Zoom for October 29th.
Tate is currently serving a life sentence at the maximum-security Menard Correctional Center in Chester for the murder of Deputy Riley.
