JR HIGH CROSS COUNTRY REGIONALS
On Wednesday, the Fairfield Colts Cross Country team competed at the SIJHSAA Class L Regional at Salem. For the Boys runners, Kaden Hutto finished 18th and for the Girls, Addison Lawyer finished 14th. Both runners qualified for the State Cross Country Meet at DuQuoin on Saturday, October 18th.

Also on Wednesday, Cross Country teams from New Hope, Jasper, Geff, Cisne, Wayne City, and Grayville all competed at the SIJHSAA Class S Regional at Mt. Vernon where several area runners qualified for the State Meet at DuQuoin. For the Boys, Jasper’s Kendall Diesel finished 1st overall while his twin brother Keaton finished 4th. New Hope’s Jayson Rawls also qualified for state. On the Girls side, New Hope’s Bristol Weber and Wayne City’s Presley Kelly also qualified for State.

The Selmaville Grade School girls and the Bluford Grade School boys both won their respective Regional Cross Country Meet, and will advance to the SIJHSAA State Cross Country Meet.

The St. Louis Blues begin their 2025-26 campaign with a game against the Minnesota Wild at Enterprise Center tonight. The Blues are looking to get back into the postseason for a second straight season. St. Louis went 1-3-and-0 against Minnesota last year. Tonight’s game gets underway at 7:00PM.

The St. Louis Blues are adding some organizational depth at goaltender. The team signed goalie Georgi Romanov to a one-year, two-way contract yesterday. Romanov will begin the season in the AHL with the Springfield Thunderbirds. The 25-year-old has spent the last two seasons with the San Jose Sharks. He lost all six of his starts with San Jose last year, and had 3.89 goals against average.

(Undated) — Only one team has punched its ticket to the Championship Series following Wednesday’s action. The Toronto Blue Jays have advanced to the ALCS following a 5-2 takedown of the New York Yankees in Game Four in the Bronx. Nathan Lukes drove-in two runs and Seranthony Dominguez earned the win in relief to help the Jays win the best-of-five series 3-1. Elsewhere in the American League, the Detroit Tigers forced a Game Five with a 9-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners in the Motor City. In NLDS action, the Chicago Cubs kept their season alive with a 4-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field. The Philadelphia Phillies rounded out a day of playoff play with a dominant 8-2 clobbering of the Dodgers in Los Angeles. The postseason continues with a pair of Game Fours on Thursday. The Dodgers will host the Phillies, while the Cubs entertain the Brewers.

(Undated) — An NFC East showdown takes place on Thursday Night Football to kick off Week Six. The Eagles square off against the Giants from East Rutherford. Philly leads the division at 4-and-1 while New York brings up the rear at 1-and-4. The Sunday slate starts with another international matchup when the Broncos and Jets tangle in London. Sunday Night Football features the Lions and Chiefs clashing in Kansas City while a Monday night doubleheader is back on tap. The Bills battle the Falcons from Atlanta and the Bears duel the Commanders in Landover.

(Philadelphia, PA) — The Eagles are down a key member of their offensive line for a Thursday Night Football clash against the Giants in East Rutherford. Landon Dickerson has been ruled out with an ankle injury. The left guard got hurt during last weekend’s collapse to the Broncos. In addition, star defensive lineman Jalen Carter is considered “questionable” for the NFC East showdown with a heel injury.

(East Rutherford, NJ) — The Giants’ receiving corps will be shorthanded this week. Wideout Darius Slayton has been ruled out for New York’s Thursday night battle against the Philadelphia Eagles. Slayton was injured during the Giants’ loss to the Saints, and was listed as a nonparticipant in a practice projection all this week. He has 12 catches for 166 yards through five games this season.

(Santa Clara, CA) — The 49ers may be without their franchise quarterback for Week Six. San Francisco’s starting signal caller Brock Purdy did not practice Wednesday and might miss his fourth game this season due to a toe injury. Niners coach Kyle Shanahan said that the team has not considered placing Purdy on injured reserve while also noting that the 25-year-old QB has been progressing in his recovery. Mac Jones is in line to make his fourth start of the season if Purdy is unable to suit up for Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Jones has passed for 905 yards, six touchdowns and one interception this season.

(Tempe, AZ) — The Cardinals were without their signal caller on Wednesday. Arizona quarterback Kyler Murry missed practice with an injury he suffered in Sunday’s loss to the Tennessee Titans. Coach Jonathan Gannon said that if Murray is healthy enough, he will play this weekend against the Colts in Indianapolis. Murray has thrown for 962 yards with six touchdowns and three interceptions this season.

(Cincinnati, OH) — The Bengals are making a switch at quarterback. Head coach Zac Taylor told the media on Wednesday that Joe Flacco will be under center for the team’s Week Six matchup at the Packers on Sunday. The 40-year-old joined Cincy in a trade with the Browns earlier in the week. Flacco has two touchdowns and six interceptions on the season and will replace the struggling Jake Browning.

(Milwaukee, WI) — Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo [[ YAHN-iss ah-dedo-KOON-bo ]] reiterated his commitment to the team Wednesday. The two-time MVP told reporters that he is “locked in” with Milwaukee heading into the regular season, but called it “human” if he changes his mind. Antetokounmpo also said he wants to contend for a championship, The 13th-year pro led the Bucks to the 2021 NBA title, the second in franchise history.

>>Aces Flush Mercury In Game Three

(Phoenix, AZ) — A’ja [[ Asia ]] Wilson hit a shot with 0.3 seconds remaining to give the Aces a 90-88 win over the Mercury in Game Three of the WNBA Finals. Wilson led Las Vegas with 34 points and 14 rebounds, while Jackie Young added 21 points of her own. DeWanna Bonner scored 25 points off the bench for Phoenix and Satou Sabally [[ SAH-two SAH-buh-lee ]] contributed 24 points in the setback. The Aces now lead the series three games to none, with Game Four scheduled for Friday in Phoenix.

>>Big Deals Handed Out To NHL Standouts

(Undated) — A few NHL teams have handed out big deals to standout players in the first week of the new season. The Vegas Golden Knights have signed forward Jack Eichel [[ IGH-kuhl ]] to an eight-year, 108-million-dollar contract extension. The deal carries a 13.5-million-dollar average annual value and makes the 28-year-old the third-highest-paid player in the league. Eichel had 28 goals and 66 assists in 77 games played last season. Elsewhere, the Winnipeg Jets signed star forward Kyle Connor to an eight-year, 96-million-dollar extension. It is the richest contract in Jets franchise history. The 28-year-old has scored 30 or more goals in seven of his eight full NHL seasons. In Edmonton, the Oilers locked up defenseman Mattias [[ ma-TEE-uhs ]] Ekholm with a three-year, 12-million-dollar extension. The 35-year-old had 33 points in 65 games last season.

(Yokohama, Japan) — Three players are currently tied atop the leaderboard after the first round of the Baycurrent Classic in Japan. Max Greyserman, Bud Cauley and Brian Campbell each shot a four under 67 in the opening round of the tournament. Eight others are tied for second place at three under par. Vince Whaley, David Lipsky and Mikumu Horikawa will be among the first group of players teeing off round two on Thursday.
