CITY OF FAIRFIELD TO BEGIN WATER SYSTEM DISINFECTION WITH CHLORINE TUESDAY

By Mark Wells Oct 13, 2025 | 12:00 PM

Starting Tuesday, October 14th the City of Fairfield will begin disinfecting its water system using chlorine, a process commonly known as a “free chlorine burn.” This marks a change from the city’s usual use of chloramines—a combination of chlorine and ammonia—for water disinfection.

According to the Fairfield Water Department, this process will make the water smell and taste more like typical pool water. The change aims to cleanse the water system more thoroughly by flushing out impurities and maintaining clean water lines.

Fire hydrants throughout the city will be flushed to remove chloramines and allow free chlorine to circulate. Residents may notice a chlorine odor or taste in their tap water during this time. The city assures the public that the water remains safe to drink.

Temporary discoloration of the water may also occur. Residents are advised not to be alarmed if they observe any changes, as this is expected and will only last for the duration of the process.

For questions or concerns, citizens can contact the Water Department at 618-842-7015.
