AREA SPORTS RESULTS FROM THE WEEKEND:
On Saturday, the Mules and Lady Mules Cross Country Teams were in action at the Benton Invitational. The Mules Boys Team finished 3rd overall. Medalists for Fairfield were Ashton King-11th, Treyton Lewis-13th, Skylar Bladel-19th, and Jarret Vaughan-20th. Other results for the Boys squad were Kanyen Lingafelter-31st, Vance Vanway-69th, and Morgan Spina-75th.

The Lady Mules Team placed 2nd overall, with Medalists Emeri Sager-10th and Adi Hickey-16th, leading the way. Other results for the Lady Mules were Jaycie Couch-24th, Brianna Meeks-28th, Ellanie Vanway-30th, Remi Taylor-33rd, Gabby Zurliene-36th, and Jilliona Olivier-Wilkerson-58th. The Cross Country Team will be in action again on Tuesday at Hamilton County for the Roger Lee Invitational.

Mt Vernon High School Volleyball Team ran the table at the Grayville Tournament over the weekend. The Lady Rams defeated Cisne, Hutsonville, and Grayville to capture the Title.

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS GOLF:
In Girls High School golf, nobody has been more dominant for so long, as the Mt Carmel Lady Aces. On Saturday, they won their 5th straight State Championship, in impressive fashion, winning by 25 strokes with a 48 over Qunicy Notre Dame who finished 2nd with shooting at 73.

HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL REGIONALS RELEASED:
High School Volleyball Regional brackets have been released. The Fairfield Lady Mules received the #2 seed in the sub-sectional and will play in the 2A Mt. Carmel Regional and will get a 1st round bye for being the top seed. Here’s the schedule:

The St. Louis Blues will try to get on a winning streak when they visit the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena tonight. The Blues are tied for fourth place in the Central Division with two points and a 1-1-and-0 record to start the season. Tonight’s game gets underway at 6:30PM

The Chicago Blackhawks are still winless following a 3-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens at United Center on Saturday. The Hawks allowed a game-winning goal to Kaiden Guhle with 15 seconds left in regulation. Connor Bedard and Sam Rinzel both scored in the losing effort. The 0-2-and-1 Hawks host the Mammoth tonight.

>>Illini Lose Saturday

(Champaign, IL) – The number-25 Illinois Fighting Illini got off to a slow start during a 34-16 loss to number-one Ohio State at Memorial Stadium on Saturday. The Illini trailed 20-0 late in the second quarter before working back into the game. Luke Altmyer passed for 248 yards, a touchdown, and an interception in the losing effort. Illinois dropped to 2-and-2 in Big Ten play and 5-and-2 overall. The Illini are at Washington on October 25th.

(Undated) — Another NFL Sunday is in the rearview. The Chiefs capped off the day with a 30-17 win over the Lions on Sunday Night Football at Arrowhead Stadium. Patrick Mahomes passed for 257 yards and three touchdowns. The Chiefs improved to 3-and-3 and the Lions dropped to 4-and-2. In other top matchups, the Buccaneers toppled the 49ers 30-19, the Seahawks beat the Jaguars 20-12, the Panthers downed the Cowboys 30-27, and the Broncos defeated the Jets 13-11 in London. Week Six wraps up with a pair of Monday Night Football games. The Falcons will host the Bills while the Bears visit the Washington Commanders.

(Tampa, FL) — The 49ers continue to be hit by the injury bug early in the season. San Francisco linebacker Fred Warner suffered a season-ending broken and dislocated right ankle in Sunday’s loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Warner will undergo surgery that will sideline him for the remainder of the 2025 season. The 28-year-old sustained the injury when safety Ji’Ayir Brown’s legs rolled into the back of his ankle midway through the first quarter. He was then carted off. Warner finishes the season with 28 total tackles, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

>>Two Colts Miss Game With Pregame Injuries

(Indianapolis, IN) — A couple of Colts were unavailable for their Week Six win over the Arizona Cardinals. Backup quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. sustained an orbital fracture during pregame warmups, and cornerback Charvarius Ward sustained a concussion. Richardson was warming up with elastic bands and he was hit in the eye due to a mishap. Ward suffered his second concussion after sustaining another during Week One.

>>Mariners Take Early ALCS Lead Over Blue Jays

(Undated) — The Mariners drew first blood in the American League Championship Series. The team took down the Blue Jays 3-1 in Game One from Toronto. Cal Raleigh went deep as Seattle now leads the best-of-seven series 1-0. The ALCS continues on Monday with Game Two while the NLCS opener between the defending champion Dodgers and the top-seeded Brewers gets underway in Milwaukee.

(Milwaukee, WI) — The National League Championship Series begins today. The Milwaukee Brewers are set to host the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers in Game One of the best-of-seven series at American Family Field. The Dodgers are slated to start left-hander Blake Snell on the mound, while the Brewers had yet to name their starter on Sunday night. Snell is 2-and-0 with a 1.38 ERA through two starts this postseason. The Dodgers are looking to lock up a spot in the World Series for the second straight season. Meanwhile, Milwaukee is aiming to clinch a spot in the Fall Classic for the first time since 1982.

>>Panthers’ Dmitry Kulikov Out Indefinitely With Injury

(Sunrise, FL) — The Panthers are already without a key veteran on their blueline. Dmitry Kulikov was placed on injured reserve and head coach Paul Maurice told the media on Saturday that the defenseman could need surgery. The 34-year-old appeared to injure his wrist in Florida’s win over the Flyers late last week. Kulikov averaged more than 19 minutes of ice time in 70 games for the Panthers last season.

(Undated) — A top-five team went down in the seventh week of the college football season. After being ranked second in the coaches poll Oregon was upset by Indiana 30-20 in Eugene. Elsewhere, Ohio State still leads the nation after a 34-16 victory over Illinois, Texas upset Oklahoma 23-6 to win the Red River Rivalry, USC came away with a 31-13 win over Michigan, Utah throttled Arizona State 42-10 and South Florida outdueled North Texas 63-36.

(Undated) — The latest college football coaches poll has been released. Ohio State is once again leading the nation. Miami, Indiana, Texas A and M and Ole Miss round out the remainder of the top five. USC, Utah, South Florida and Cincinnati are ranked 21 through 24 after not being included in last week’s poll. Michigan, Iowa State, Penn State and Arizona State are no longer in the top 25.

>>Penn State Firing HC James Franklin

(University Park, PA) — Penn State has moved to fire head football coach James Franklin. The school announced the move after the Nittany Lions suffered their third straight loss of the season on Saturday. Penn State’s Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Patrick Kraft said in a statement that they “believe this is the right moment for new leadership at the helm of our football program.” Franklin took over the role as head coach in 2014.

>>Xander Schauffele Wins Baycurrent Classic

(Yokohama, Japan) — Xander Schauffele captured his 10th career Tour victory after winning the Baycurrent Classic at Yokohama Country Club. Schauffele finished atop the leaderboard by one stroke at 19 under par. Max Greyserman finished in second at 18 under and Michael Thorbjornsen was third at 16 under par. Defending champ Nico Echavarria finished ninth at 13 under.

(Las Vegas, NV) — Denny Hamlin will race for the NASCAR Cup Series championship. The driver of the Number-11 car secured a spot in the finale after cruising to a South Point 400 win from Las Vegas to kick off the Round of Eight. Kyle Larson, Cristopher Bell, Chase Briscoe and Tyler Reddick rounded out the top-five finishers. The playoffs continue next Sunday from classic Talladega.
