The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an investigation into Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system, following 58 reports of traffic safety violations, including 14 crashes and 23 injuries.
The probe marks the initial step in a process that could lead to a recall if NHTSA determines the vehicles pose an unreasonable risk to public safety. In addition to reviewing the reported incidents, the agency is also examining Tesla’s recent deployment of self-driving robotaxis in Austin, Texas.
The investigation will assess whether Tesla’s FSD technology operates in compliance with federal safety standards. No recall has been issued at this time, and the review is ongoing.
