Market Street MTC, a non-profit organization devoted to enhancing the central business district of Mount Carmel, is seeking funding for new public art projects. Focused on aesthetics, accessibility, and comfort, Market Street MTC organizes its efforts through three teams: Beautification, Music at the Park, and Murals & Art. Through collaborations with local businesses and institutions, the organization supports projects that enrich local arts and culture, improve infrastructure, beautify shared spaces, and promote Mount Carmel as a vibrant place to live, work, and visit.
The Murals & Art team, the newest addition to Market Street MTC, is dedicated to the transformative power of art in the community. Their first commissioned project is a 7’ x 19’ banner depicting historic Market Street in the 1940s, created by artist Lisa Donohue. The banner is currently displayed on the old Ben Franklin Building, which is undergoing extensive renovations. Local high school art students also contributed by painting a sidewalk mural nearby, creating an immersive photo opportunity.
For its first painted mural, the Murals & Art team commissioned an artwork honoring Mount Carmel native Brace Beemer, the voice of the Lone Ranger radio program in the 1940s and early 1950s. Muralist Elias Reynolds, from eastern Kentucky, completed this mural on the side of the Wabash County Museum in early October.
The next project, the “Tiny Mural Program,” will involve junior high and high school students from ACA and MCHS, their instructors, and several area artists. Starting next month and continuing through the winter, the team will paint small images, designed in collaboration with local businesses, both inside and outside Market Street area buildings. Once complete, a brochure will guide visitors on a scavenger hunt to find all the tiny murals. Local businesses interested in participating are encouraged to contact Market Street MTC.
To continue and expand these public art initiatives, Market Street MTC relies on fully tax-deductible donations. Funds will support additional murals, public art installations, arts events, and arts education for children and adults in Mount Carmel.
