AREA SPORTS RESULTS FROM THE WEEKEND:
HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL:
During the IHSA Playoff Selection Show on Saturday night, the Fairfield Mules discovered that they were given a #9 seed for the playoffs and will be on the road next weekend versus the #8 seed Porta(Petersburg). Porta is approximately 3 ½ hours north and is located northwest of Springfield. Game time next Saturday is set for 3:00 p.m.

Several other area schools also received playoff berths. Johnston City will be home versus Wesclin; Flora will be home versus Nashville; CZR will be on the road versus Vandalia; Sesser-Valier-Waltonville will be on the road versus Greenfield-NW; Red Hill will be on the road versus Casey-Westfield; Mt. Carmel will be on the road versus Tolon-Unity; and Richland County will be home versus Jacksonville.

HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY REGIONALS:
The Mules and Lady Mules Cross Country teams were both in action Saturday at the IHSA Class 1A Regionals at Trenton-Wesclin. The Mules Boys team placed 3rd and advance to the Sectionals next Saturday. The Lady Mules finished 4th and also advance to next weekend’s Sectionals.

HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL:
FAIRFIELD INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT:
The Lady Mules went 3-1 on the day with their only loss coming at the hands of Massac County, who went undefeated for the tournament. Fairfield’s Dalanie Ellis and Jensyn Robbins were named to the All-Tournament Team. The Lady Mules will next be in action on Tuesday at the Mt. Carmel Regional.

The Hawks are tied for fifth place in the Central Division with ten points. They host Ottawa tomorrow night. The St. Louis Blues completely fell apart during a 6-4 loss to the Detroit Red Wings Saturday. The Blues led 4-0 early before the Red Wings scored three goals in both the second and third periods. Jake Neighbours had a pair of goals in the losing effort, while Jordan Kyrou and Pavel Buchnevich also lit the lamp. St. Louis is in last place in the Central Division with seven points. The Blues visit the Penguins tonight.

(Seattle, WA) — The Illinois Fighting Illini dropped out of the top-25 with a 42-25 loss to the Washington Huskies at Husky Stadium. The Illini trailed by just four at halftime before getting outscored 21-8 in the second half. Luke Altmyer passed for 199 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions in the losing effort. (New York, NY) — Former star New York Jets center Nick Mangold, who played eleven seasons with the Jets, died Saturday night of complications from kidney disease. He shared his fight publicly in a social media post earlier this month, revealing at the time that he needed a kidney transplant. Mangold was selected by the Jets in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft, the same year he was diagnosed with the genetic defect that led to his chronic kidney disease. Nick Mangold was 41.

(Los Angeles, CA) — The World Series is shifting to Los Angeles all tied up at one game apiece. The Dodgers will host the Blue Jays in Game Three of the Fall Classic on tonight in Los Angeles. The teams split the first two games in Toronto with the Dodgers earning a 5-1 victory in Game Two on Saturday to tie the best-of-seven series. Yoshinobu Yamamoto tossed his second consecutive complete game while Will Smith homered and drove in three runs to lead LA. Veteran Max Scherzer will be on the bump in Game Three for the Blue Jays, while the Dodgers counter with fellow right-hander Tyler Glasnow.

(Undated) — The Orioles have their new skipper. According to multiple reports, Baltimore is negotiating with Guardians associate manager Craig Albernaz to become the club’s manager. Albernaz has spent the past two seasons on Cleveland’s staff and the job would be his first as a full-time big league manager. The Orioles fired manager Brandon Hyde in May after a 15-and-28 start.

>>Lakers’ Doncic Out At Least One Week With Injuries

(Undated) — The Lakers will be without their superstar guard for at least the next week. Los Angeles star Luka Doncic [[ DON-chitch ]] is set to miss time with a left finger sprain and a lower left leg contusion. He will be re-evaluated in approximately one week and the team is reportedly optimistic that he will not need extended time for recovery beyond the initial estimated timeline. The 26-year-old is averaging 46 points, 11.5 rebounds and 8.5 assists through two games played this season.. The Lakers are now without Doncic and LeBron James for the near future as both recover from their injuries.

(Undated) — The top of the latest college football coaches poll looks the same as last week. Ohio State is once again leading the nation. Indiana, Texas A and M, Alabama, Georgia, Oregon, Georgia Tech, Ole Miss, Miami and BYU round out the top 10. Houston is number 22, Navy is 23rd, Utah is 24th and Memphis is number 25 after not being included in last week’s poll. LSU, South Florida, Illinois and Arizona State were left out of this week’s top 25.

In ranked action, Texas A&M scored 35 consecutive points to beat LSU 49-25 in Death Valley, Ole Miss beat Oklahoma 34-26 in Norman and Vanderbilt beat Missouri 17-10 in Nashville. Three more ranked teams went down Saturday, as Houston upset Arizona State 24-16 in Tempe, Washington knocked off Illinois 42-25 at home and Memphis took down South Florida 34-31, also at home.

(Baton Rouge, LA) — LSU is on the search for a new head football coach. ESPN is reporting that LSU has informed Brian Kelly of the school’s intention to dismiss him from his role. The program is expected to inform the team of the move at a meeting on Sunday night. Talks about the terms of his departure are expected to continue as he is owed just over 54-million-dollars in buyout money. The move follows a stretch where the Tigers have lost three of their last four games and were handed a 49-25 loss at home by Texas A&M on Saturday. The 64-year-old has compiled a 34-and-14 record over four seasons in Baton Rouge. He signed a 10-year deal when he left Notre Dame to join LSU in November 2021.

(Ivins, UT) — Michael Brennan is celebrating his first career Tour victory after winning the Bank of Utah Championship. Brennan finished atop the leaderboard at 22 under par. Rico Hoey finished in second place at 18 under. Ben Silverman, Justin Lower, David Ford, Thorbjorn Olesen, Pierceson Coody and defending champion Matt McCarty finished in a six-way tie for third at 16 under par.

(Martinsville, VA) — The Championship Four in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs is set. William Byron earned an Xfinity 500 victory from Martinsville Speedway to wrap up the Round of Eight. The driver of the Number-24 car will battle Denny Hamlin, Chase Briscoe and Kyle Larson for the Cup Series Championship next Sunday from Phoenix Raceway.
