Additional information has been released following last Wednesday’s tragic helicopter crash near Ekalaka, Montana, that claimed the lives of four members of the family of Illinois Republican gubernatorial candidate for governor, Darren Bailey.

The victims have been identified as 37-year-old Zachary Bailey, son of Darren Bailey; Zachary’s wife, 35-year-old Kelsey; and their children, 12-year-old Vada Rose and 7-year-old Samuel, all of Xenia. Zachary Bailey, who earned his helicopter license about a year ago to assist with delivering medical supplies in developing countries, was piloting the aircraft at the time of the crash.

The crash occurred in the Chalk Butte area, a remote region characterized by flat-topped buttes and sparse trees. Reports indicate the family had attended a helicopter convention in Montana and were on a sightseeing flight when the accident occurred. The Baileys’ 10-year-old son, Finn, was flying in another helicopter and was unharmed.

Federal records show the Robinson R66 model involved has appeared in previous NTSB reports, including a 2014 Louisiana incident where a bird strike damaged the rotor but caused no injuries. The R66 is a five-seat turbine helicopter frequently used for personal and commercial purposes.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) continues to investigate the cause of the crash, with preliminary findings expected in the coming weeks.

Funeral arrangements for the Bailey family are being handled by Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora.
