CLAY COUNTY 911 NOW ABLE TO RECEIVE TEXT MESSAGES IN EMERGENCIES

The Clay County Emergency Telephone System Board has announced that local 911 services are now equipped to receive text messages, allowing residents to text 911 during an emergency when calling is not possible.

Wireless customers can now send a text message—up to 140 characters—to 911 in an emergency situation. Officials emphasize that Text to 911 should only be used in an emergency when placing a traditional voice call is not safe or feasible, such as if the caller is deaf, hard of hearing, has a speech impairment, or when speaking out loud could put them in danger.  The Board warns that it is a crime to send false reports by text or phone, and prank texters can be located.

A text or data plan is required to use the service. As with all text messages, delivery may be delayed, out of order, or fail to send entirely. If a response is not received, callers should attempt a voice call to 911 instead.

At this time, photos, videos, and group texts cannot be sent to 911. Text messages must be sent directly to “911” only.

Officials note that while texting offers another way to reach emergency services, a voice call remains the fastest and most reliable way to contact 911.
