PRITZKER DIRECTS $20 MILLION TO STRENGTHEN ILLINOIS FOOD BANKS

Governor JB Pritzker has signed an executive order allocating $20 million in state funding to bolster food banks across Illinois as they prepare for an anticipated rise in demand.

The order provides $10 million from the state’s emergency BRIDGE Fund and another $10 million from the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS). The funds will support seven regional food banks that serve more than 2,600 pantries and meal programs statewide.

While state officials did not specify which food banks will receive the funding, the statewide organization “Feeding Illinois” operates seven major food banks, including the Tri-State Food Bank, which serves far southern Illinois.

“Access to food is fundamental to the well-being of our communities,” Pritzker said. “This funding will help ensure Illinois families continue to have access to healthy meals during a time of growing need.”

Officials said the funds will be distributed quickly, allowing food banks to purchase and deliver more food to local pantries. Many organizations have already reported increased demand as families struggle with higher grocery prices and economic challenges.
