Lieutenant Brian Wilson, Commander of Illinois State Police Troop 9, has announced the results of Occupant Restraint Enforcement Patrols (OREP) conducted in Clay, Effingham, Fayette, Marion, Wabash, and White counties throughout October. These patrols provided additional coverage, allowing officers to concentrate on saving lives by ensuring all vehicle occupants were properly restrained.
During these enforcement efforts, state police issued a total of 99 citations and 31 written warnings. Of those citations, 86 were for safety belt violations and 1 was for a child restraint violation.
Although most drivers understand that safety belts save lives, some still choose to put themselves and their families at risk by not using seat belts or proper child restraint devices. These patrols aim to reinforce the importance of occupant protection by targeting those who fail to comply with the law. The simple act of buckling up can save lives. This initiative was funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
