The Illinois Department of Public Health is warning the public about the dangers of consuming raw milk after at least 11 people recently became sick.

According to the IDPH it has identified an outbreak of 11 cases of Campylobacter infection that appears to be linked to consuming raw milk from a common source.  They report the producer is taking steps to notify customers and is cooperating with the investigation.

Health officials say raw milk is not pasteurized and is more likely to be a source of foodborne illness.    According to the IDPH the bacteria can cause diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps, and can lead to irritable bowel syndrome in more severe cases.  Anyone who happens to consume raw milk and has had the mentioned symptoms should contact their medical provider.
