WAYNE COUNTY BOARD APPROVES 2026 BUDGET, ROOF PROJECT, AND HVAC UPGRADES

The Wayne County Board met Thursday night in the upstairs courtroom for its November meeting, with 13 members present.

During public comment, Amy Hart of WADI highlighted Southern Illinois workforce programs and services available to individuals experiencing homelessness, domestic crises, or needing food and utility assistance.

Chairman Daryl Hargrave announced one appointment, naming Bill Bruce to the Wayne County Health Department Board.

Under old business, Dave Shipley of Midwest Telecom updated board members on recent internet system upgrades for county offices. Sheriff Chris Otey also reported the search is underway for a new courthouse and jail custodian to replace retiring employee Brian Dunnigan.

In new business, the board approved the 2026 county budget and tax levy, as well as the 2026 holiday schedule.

Board members also approved several major expenditures:

$41,000 for a metal roof system for the Wayne County Health Department’s main building and garage

$29,500 for Phase 9 of the new courthouse HVAC system installation

With no additional business, the meeting adjourned.
