The State Of Illinois allowing residents to store their identification on eligible iPhones and paired Apple Watches beginning today. Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias’ office says the rollout will start with Apple Wallet, with support for Google and Samsung wallets planned in the future.
Users can add their ID by tapping the “+” symbol in the Wallet app, selecting “Driver’s License or State ID,” scanning their physical card, and completing a selfie and head-movement verification.
The digital ID is designed to offer added convenience and enhanced privacy. When presented at places like bars or airports, only essential information—such as confirmation that the holder is 21 or older—is shared, rather than full personal details like an address.
Officials emphasize that the mobile ID is a companion to the physical card, not a replacement. Law enforcement and businesses may not yet accept the digital version in all circumstances, and residents are advised to continue carrying their physical ID, especially when driving or interacting with officers.
