On Tuesday, the Southern Illinois Coaches Association (SICA) released its list of selections to the All-South Football team. Fairfield Community High School players, Michael Barner, Jayden Wilson and Lane Robson were all named to the team.
HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL:
The FCHS Lady Mules opened their season last night on the road versus the Newton Lady Eagles. In the JV matchup, the Lady Mules pulled out a close 27-25 victory. In the Varsity game, the Lady Mules fell to Newton by a score of 48-39. The Lady Mules were led in scoring by Bentli Belva with 16 points and Mabry Foster with 11 points.

The St. Louis Blues picked up a point during a 3-2 overtime loss against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena. Toronto scored the game-winning goal in the final minute of the extra frame. Nathan Walker and Dalibor Dvorsky both lit the lamp in the losing effort. St. Louis has dropped four of five. The Blues are in seventh place in the Central Division with 17 points. They visit the Flyers tomorrow night.

The Chicago Blackhawks scored three goals in the third period during a 5-2 win over the Calgary Flames at United Center. Connor Bedard scored the go-ahead goal in the fifth minute of the third, and he sealed the game with an empty-netter in the final minute of regulation. Bedard finished with three goals in the victory, while Oliver Moore and Ryan Donato also lit the lamp. Chicago is tied for third place in the Central Division with 24 points. The Blackhawks host Seattle tomorrow night.

(Chicago, IL) — The number-eight Illinois Fighting Illini go for their fifth win in a row when they take on number-11 Alabama at United Center tonight. The Illini are coming off an 84-65 rout over Colgate last Friday. Illinois is off to a 4-and-0 start this season. Tonight’s game tips off at 8:00PM and can be heard on WFIW-AM 1390 on the Illini Sports Radio Network powered by Learfield with pre-game activities starting at 7:00PM.

(St. Louis, MO) — The St. Louis Cardinals are getting their 40-man roster ready for the Rule Five Draft. The Cardinals added four players to their roster who would have otherwise been in the Rule Five pool. Catcher Leonardo Bernal, outfielder Joshua Baez, and pitchers Cooper Hjerpe and Brycen Mautz were all added to the 40-man. The team also designated reliever Jorge Alcala for assignment.

(Chicago, IL) — Shota Imanaga is staying in Chicago after all. The Cubs ace accepted a 22-million dollar qualifying offer from the Cubs yesterday. The Northsiders originally decline a three-year club option on Imanaga, who later declined his 15.25-million dollar player option. The 32-year-old went 9-and-8 with a 3.73 ERA in 25 starts last season.

(Chicago, IL) — The Chicago White Sox are wheeling and dealing. The Southsiders traded for Rays outfielder Everson Pereira and minor league infielder Tanner Murray. Chicago also acquired Red Sox reliever Chris Murphy. The Sox sent pitchers Steven Wilson and Yoendrys Gomez to Tampa Bay, and they traded minor league catcher Ronny Hernandez to Boston in order to complete both deals. In other club news, the White Sox added two players to their 40-man roster yesterday.

(Undated) — The Angels and Orioles swapped a pair of players on Tuesday. Los Angeles sent outfielder Taylor Ward to Baltimore in exchange for pitcher Grayson Rodriguez. Ward hit .228 with a career-high 36 home runs 103 RBIs this season. He has one year remaining on his current contract. Rodriguez did not pitch in 2025 due to multiple arm injuries. He went 13-and-4 with a 3.86 ERA in 2024 before a strained lat ended his season.

(New York, NY) — Major League Baseball’s Owners Meetings began on Tuesday. Discussions at the meetings are expected to center on the upcoming end of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the league’s owners and players, which is set to expire in just over a year. Among the issues that could divide the sides is the potential implementation of a salary cap. The meetings will run until Thursday.

(Houston, TX) — The Texans will be without their starting quarterback for a third straight game. Houston QB C.J. Stroud has still not cleared the concussion protocol and has been ruled out for the Thursday Night Football matchup against the Buffalo Bills. Stroud practiced on a limited basis Tuesday but has not progressed enough to suit up on a short week. ESPN reports that the 24-year-old is expected to available to play against the Indianapolis Colts on the road in Week 13. Safety Jalen Pitre will also miss his third straight game after suffering a concussion in Week Nine.

(Pittsburgh, PA) — The Steelers are getting great news on their star quarterback. Aaron Rodgers is pushing to play this Sunday against the Bears in Chicago. NFL Network reports the future Hall of Famer does not need surgery for a wrist fracture on his non-throwing hand. Head coach Mike Tomlin told the media they’ll get more “clarity” on Rodgers as the week progresses.

(Cleveland, OH) — More details are surfacing on the home break-in of an NFL player. Police say about two-hundred-thousand dollars was stolen from Shedeur Sanders’ house while he was playing against the Ravens on Sunday. Three people broke inside and spent about 10 minutes stealing items before leaving. The rookie quarterback is yet another targeted victim in a long list of pro athletes dealing with home break-ins.

Ohio State, Indiana and Texas A and M remain the top three teams, but Georgia has moved into the top four in the nation. Texas Tech, Ole Miss, Oregon, Oklahoma, Notre Dame and Alabama round out the remainder of the top 10. Number 13 Miami would be the 11th seed and number 24 Tulane would be the 12th seed in the projected bracket.

(Morgantown, WV) — West Virginia football is flipping a major recruit. Kevin Brown announced his commitment to the Mountaineers on Tuesday. The offensive tackle is a four-star prospect and is the highest-ranked player the school has signed in about 15 years. Brown originally committed to Penn State, but withdrew his pledge when head coach James Franklin got fired from the Nittany Lions this season.

(Undated) — Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo will reportedly be on the shelf. According to multiple reports, the two-time MVP will miss the next one-to-two weeks with a groin strain he suffered during Monday’s loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Antetokounmpo is averaging 31.2 points, 10.8 rebounds and six-point-eight assists per game this season.

(Undated) — A trio of standout freshmen are headlining this year’s men’s basketball Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 Watchlist. Kansas guard Darryn Peterson, BYU forward AJ Dybantsa and Duke forward Cameron Boozer are the top names to make the list that was announced on Tuesday. The freshmen are also ESPN’s projected top-three picks in next summer’s NBA Draft. The top 50 includes nine freshmen, which is four more than last year’s list had at this time. Purdue’s Braden Smith is also a favorite to win the award along with Kansas State’s P.J. Haggerty and Texas Tech’s JT Toppin.
