ILLINOIS HUNTERS PREPARE FOR SECOND FIREARM DEER SEASON

By Mark Wells Dec 1, 2025 | 11:57 AM

Hunters across Illinois are preparing for the state’s second firearm deer season, which begins half an hour before sunrise on Thursday, December 4th, and runs through Sunday, December 7th.

Wildlife officials are reminding hunters to sign their deer permits before heading out and to wear blaze orange or blaze pink for increased visibility and safety.

Those hunting from tree stands are strongly urged to use safety harnesses, as tree stand accidents remain the leading cause of hunting-related injuries and fatalities in Illinois. In 2024, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources reported that 70% of hunting incidents were linked to tree stand mishaps, often due to a lack of fall arrest systems. One such incident resulted in a fatality, when a hunter fell approximately 15 feet, sustaining severe injuries including a broken pelvis, broken ribs, and a punctured lung.

Hunters are encouraged to take all necessary precautions to ensure a safe and successful season.
