HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL:
On Friday, FCHS Volleyball players Gracie Atwood and Jensyn Robbins were named to the Southern Illinois Coaches Association All-South Volleyball Team. They were joined on the team by Wayne City’s Addison Caldwell, Emma Griswold, and Rylie Backes; Edwards County’s Grace Bishop, Alice Robb, and Grace McCarty; and Carmi-White County’s Caroline Simmons, Jayda Smith, and Addi Elliot.

WEATHER CANCELLATIONS:
The winter weather on Saturday played havoc with the weekend’s sports schedule as several area teams events were either cancelled or postponed. The Cisne Runnin’ Lions Boys Basketball team was scheduled to play in the Martinsville Bluestreak Tournament but it was postponed until tonight. The Wayne City Lady Indians Basketball team’s involvement in the Mary Sur Basketball Tournament in Mattoon was cancelled. The FCHS Mules Wrestling team’s Tri-Meet at Centralia was also postponed.

HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL:
CAPITAL CLASSIC AT LAWRENCEVILLE AND RED HILL:
On Saturday, the FCHS Mules Basketball team came home with a 4th Place finish at the Capital Classic Basketball Tournament. Fairfield picked up a 55-44 victory over Mt. Carmel in the morning session before falling to Vincennes Lincoln 49-45 in the 3rd Place game. Lawrenceville was the eventual winner of the tournament going 4-0 on the weekend. Fairfield’s Owen Gruen was named to the All-Tournament Team. The Mules will be back in action next Friday on the road versus Waltonville.

MT. CARMEL LADY ACES BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT:
Also on Saturday, the Lady Mules Basketball team finished 2nd at the 1st Annual Mt. Carmel Lady Aces Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament. Fairfield finished 2-1 in the tournament after a 53-43 victory over Lawrenceville on Saturday morning. Lady Mules players Mabrey Foster and Riley Jolly were named to the All-Tournament Team. The Lady Mules will be back in action Tuesday night at the Mule Barn for a home game versus Paris.

The Blackhawks overcame a three-goal first period deficit to beat the Ducks 5-3 at home. Tyler Bertuzzi, Ryan Greene, and Colton Dach scored to tie the game for Chicago before Connor Bedard scored the final two tallies in the third period of the victory. Spencer Knight allowed three goals on 26 shots between the pipes. The Blackhawks snapped a five-game skid to improve to 11-9-and-5 this season. They visit the Golden Knights tomorrow night.

Joel Hofer stood on his head as the St. Louis Blues beat the Utah Mammoth 1-0 at Enterprise Center on Saturday. Hofer saved all 18 shots that he faced in the victory, while Dylan Holloway scored the game’s only goal in the second period. St. Louis is in seventh place in the Central Division with 25 points. The Blues host the Ducks tonight.

>>Illini Take Down Northwestern

(Champaign, IL) — The Illinois Fighting Illini wrapped up the regular season with a 20-13 win over the Northwestern Wildcats at Memorial Stadium on Saturday. Ca’lil Valentine rushed for 74 yards and a touchdown in the victory. Illinois finished the year tied in seventh place in the Big Ten with a 5-and-4 conference record and an 8-and-4 mark overall. Preston Stone threw three interceptions in the losing effort. The Wildcats are tied for tenth place in the Big Ten with a 4-and-5 conference record and a 6-and-6 mark overall. The Illini’s bowl destination will be announced on December 7th.

(New York, NY) — The number-14 Illinois Fighting Illini basketball team got off to a slow start during a 74-61 loss to number-seven UConn at Madison Square Garden on Friday. The Illini trailed 43-32 at halftime and were down by double digits throughout most of the second half. Kylan Boswell had 25 points in the losing effort. Illinois dropped to 6-and-2. The Illini take on number-16 Tennessee on Saturday.

The Jaguars lead the AFC South due to a tiebreaker after beating the Titans and watching the Colts get upset by the Texans. In the NFC, the Bears are sitting atop the conference due to a tiebreaker with the Rams after Los Angeles was stunned by the Panthers. On Sunday Night Football, the Broncos managed to keep pace atop the AFC after their win over the Commanders. Week 13 wraps up with the Patriots hosting the Giants on Monday Night Football.

(Pittsburgh, PA) — The Steelers are placing their starting left tackle on injured reserve. Broderick Jones will miss the next four games with a neck injury. The offensive lineman got hurt in a Week 12 loss to the Bears and will be eligible to come back in the second-to-last game of the regular season. Jones was taken with the 14th-overall pick in the 2023 draft and started almost 40 games since his rookie season.

(Undated) – The college football regular season wrapped up over the weekend. In ranked-on-ranked action, top-ranked Ohio State bested number 15 Michigan 27-9 on the road, number 16 Texas upset third-ranked Texas A&M 27-17 in Austin, and number four Georgia topped Georgia Tech 16-9 in Atlanta. Elsewhere, number 12 Miami blew out number 22 Pittsburgh in the Steel City, 14th-ranked Vanderbilt took down number 17 Tennessee 45-24 on the road, and number 25 Arizona beat number 20 Arizona State 23-7 in Tempe. Also in the top 25, number seven Ole Miss beat Mississippi State 38-19 in Lane Kiffin’s final game with the Rebels.

(Baton Rouge, LA) — Lane Kiffin is leaving Ole Miss to become the head coach at LSU. Kiffin made the announcement Sunday, and will also not coach the Rebels in the College Football Playoff. His deal to head to Baton Rouge is seven years, worth 12-million dollars annually. Ole Miss moved quickly after the decision, saying defensive coordinator Pete Golding will now take over the role permanently.

(Gainesville, FL) — Florida football is bringing in a new head coach. ESPN reports the school is finalizing a six-year deal to hire Tulane’s Jon Sumrall. The 43-year-old is 32-and-11 in four seasons as a head coach between the Green Wave and Troy. Sumrall has reached the conference title game in all four seasons split evenly between both programs. He’ll replace Billy Napier, who was fired back in October.

(Auburn, AL) — Auburn football has found its next leader. The school announced Sunday that South Florida’s Alex Golesh has been hired as its next head football coach. According to ESPN, the deal is for six years. Golesh went 23-and-15 over three seasons at South Florida, including a 9-and-3 record in 2025. He takes over for Hugh Freeze who was fired after going 15-and-19 in two-plus seasons. The Tigers have suffered five straight losing seasons.

(Atlanta, GA) — A star player on the Hawks is still out indefinitely. Trae Young will be re-evaluated in two weeks as he nurses a sprained knee. The guard hurt his MCL about a month ago during a game against the Nets when a player fell into him. Young was already expected to come back in mid-December and was averaging almost 18 points and eight assists per game this season before getting injured.

(New York, NY) — The Rangers will be without a key member of their blue line for a while. According to ESPN, defenseman Adam Fox is being placed on long-term injured reserve with an upper body injury. He is considered to be week-to-week and should be available for the Olympics in February. Fox appeared to suffer the injury after getting checked into the boards by Lightning forward Brandon Hagel. New York hosts the Dallas Stars on Tuesday.
