The National Weather Service says a light wintry mix is expected to move into southeast Missouri, southern Illinois and western Kentucky beginning Monday evening and continuing into Tuesday morning, prompting the issuance of a Winter Weather Advisory for the region.
Forecasters say up to one inch of snow and sleet is possible, along with a light glaze of ice, mainly across southern areas. Tuesday morning travel may be impacted, with slick roads—especially bridges and overpasses—and hazardous conditions on untreated sidewalks.
Following this first round of wintry weather, the major story becomes the cold. Temperatures will remain below normal all week, with nighttime lows dipping well into the 20s and some spots dropping into the upper teens.
A stretch of mainly dry conditions is expected by midweek, but forecasters are already monitoring another chance for precipitation late Thursday night into Friday, though confidence on precipitation type remains low at this time.
