The Chicago Blackhawks gave up a late goal during a 4-3 shootout loss to the Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena. Connor Bedard scored in the third period to give Chicago a lead, but Vegas tied the game with under three minutes left in regulation. The Blackhawks lost 2-1 in a four-round shootout. Oliver Moore and Tyler Bertuzzi also scored in the losing effort. Chicago is in fourth place in the Central Division with 28 points. The Hawks visit the Kings tomorrow night.

The St. Louis Blues are bringing in some depth at center. The team traded for Kings center Akil Thomas yesterday. St. Louis sent forward Nikita Alexandrov back to Los Angeles to complete the deal. Thomas is in the middle of his second NHL season. He has one goal and two assists in 25 games this year. The Blues visit the Bruins tomorrow night.

Cubs Sign IF Kingery
(Chicago, IL) — The Chicago Cubs are adding some depth in the infield. The Northsiders signed utility player Scott Kingery to a minor league deal yesterday. The contract includes and invitation to Spring Training. Kingery hit .148 in 19 games with the Angels last season.

(Pittsburgh, PA) — The Steelers are bringing in a new weapon for Aaron Rodgers. The team claimed Adam Thielen [[ THEE-lin ]] off waivers on Tuesday. The receiver got cut by the Vikings after the team’s shutout loss to the Seahawks last weekend. Thielen was a healthy scratch and played just three snaps the week before. Pittsburgh released cornerback Darius Slay and elevated Asante Samuel Jr. from the practice squad in a following move.

(Undated) — The latest College Football Playoff rankings are here. Ohio State remains the Number-1 team in the nation as the committee released the penultimate Top-25 list before selection Sunday. Indiana is still second while Georgia, Texas Tech, Oregon and Ole Miss all moved up one spot to round out three-through-six. Texas A-and-M slipped four spots to seventh. The Buckeyes, Hoosiers, Bulldogs and Red Raiders would get first-round byes if the rankings hold. Number-11 BYU and 12th-ranked Miami would get bumped for Number-17 Virginia and 20th-ranked Tulane in the projected 12-team bracket following conference championship results.

(Undated) — Ole Miss football will be keeping one of its coaches on staff until the end of the College Football Playoff. Charlie Weis Jr. will be allowed to return to the Rebels as the offensive coordinator after agreeing to join Lane Kiffin at LSU. Weis has been the OC at Ole Miss under Kiffin since 2022. The Rebels finished the regular season 11-and-1 and are number six in the CFP rankings.

Administrators are in the process of putting together a “lucrative” contract to keep Sitake with the team. The Nittany Lions are still looking for a new coach after firing James Franklin mid-season.

(Lubbock, TX) — Texas Tech is rewarding its head football coach with a new contract. The school announced that it has agreed to a new seven-year deal with Joey McGuire. ESPN reports that the new deal averages nearly seven-million-dollars per year. The contract also includes incentives for future Big 12 and postseason success. The Red Raiders are ranked fourth in the College Football Playoff rankings and will enter the Big 12 Championship this weekend with an 11-and-1 record. McGuire is 34-and-17 in four years in Lubbock, which is tied for the most wins at the school through that span since Jim Carlen from 1970-to-1973.

(Denton, TX) — The North Texas Mean Green have decided who will be the next leader of their football program. The school announced that Neal Brown has signed a contract to become the next coach at North Texas. ESPN reports that the deal is for five years. Brown has previously been the head coach at West Virginia and Troy, where he has compiled a record of 72-and-51 across 10 seasons. He replaces Eric Morris, who was hired by Oklahoma State last week following an 11-and-1 regular season in Denton. Brown spent the past season on the staff at Texas after being fired at West Virginia last December.

(Berkeley, CA) — Cal is narrowing its search for a new head football coach. The Athletic is reporting that Cal is targeting Oregon defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi [[ LOO-poy ]] to become its next head coach and he is expected to be hired in the coming days. Lupoi was the expected frontrunner for the job after the university made the decision to fire Justin Wilcox last week. Lupoi played at Cal from 2000-to-2005 before beginning a coaching career with the Golden Bears in 2008 under former coach Jeff Tedford. The Bay Area native has spent the past four seasons in Eugene as Dan Lanning’s defensive coordinator.

(Auburn, AL) — Auburn football is bringing back a familiar face. New head coach Alex Golesh said in a statement that he is retaining DJ Durkin as the Tigers’ defensive coordinator. Durkin was named interim coach after Hugh Freeze was fired at the beginning of November. He had been considered a top candidate for the position before the hiring of Golesh. South Florida OC Joel Gordon is also joining Auburn’s coaching staff.

(New Orleans, LA) — The Pelicans are going to be without their top player for a while. The team announced that forward Zion Williamson has a grade two right hip adductor strain. According to ESPN, Williamson will be reevaluated in three weeks. The 25-year-old has already missed 11 games this season, including eight in a row due to a hamstring injury. He has played in just 45 percent of the Pelicans’ possible games since being drafted in 2019.

(Undated) — An NBA veteran is calling it quits. Danilo Gallinari [[ Gal-in-ARE-ee ]] announced his retirement his Tuesday. The 37-year-old played 14 seasons in the pros with the Nuggets, Clippers, Thunder, Hawks, Wizards, Bucks and Pistons. He was taken sixth-overall in the 2008 draft by New York and scored more than 11,600 points in his career, which is the most by any Italian-born player.
