The FCHS Lady Mules Basketball team was on the road Thursday night for a conference matchup with Edwards County. After holding an early lead, the Lady Mules eventually fell to Edwards County 47-38. FCHS was led in scoring by Mabrey Foster with 12 points. The JV squad dominated Edwards County 38-8 in a shortened 2-Quarter game.

The St. Louis Blues surrendered three goals in the second period of a 5-2 loss against the Boston Bruins at TD Garden. The Blues were within a goal before giving up three straight scores. Pavel Buchnevich and Pius Suter both lit the lamp in the losing effort. St. Louis is in seventh place in the Central Division with 25 points. The Blues visit Ottawa tomorrow night.

The Chicago Blackhawks took a two-goal lead in the second period and held on for a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings at Crypto-Dot-Com Arena. Connor Bedard scored on the power play and Wyatt Kaiser lit the lamp in the closing seconds of the second to give Chicago a two-goal cushion they would not relinquish. Spencer Knight finished with 26 saves in net as Chicago improved to 12-9-and-6. The Hawks take on the Kings again tomorrow night.

Carter has been dealing with shoulder issues for most of the season and has only two sacks to go with just over 30 tackles this year.

(Toronto) — LeBron James’ record double-digit scoring streak is over after almost 13-hundred games. James scored eight points Thursday night in the Los Angeles Lakers 123-120 win against Toronto, assisting on the game-winning buzzer beater from teammate Rui [[ roo-ee ]] Hachimura. James finished with eight points, 11 assists and six rebounds, ending a streak of 12-hundred-97 games in double figures that began in 2007. Among active players, you would have to add the streaks of the 11 players behind him to surpass his total.

(Undated) — Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo will miss the next two to four weeks with a calf strain, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on Thursday. Antetokounmpo suffered the injury just three minutes into Milwaukee’s win over the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday. He had previously missed four games last month with a groin injury. Antetokounmpo is averaging 28.9 points, 10.1 rebounds and six-point-one assists per game this season.

(Cleveland, OH) — The Cavaliers are feeling lighter in the wallet. The team got fined 250-thousand dollars on Thursday for violating the league’s participation policy after resting Darius Garland. The star guard was held out in a nationally televised game against the Raptors on November 24th. This is the second time Cleveland has been penalized for resting players after incurring a 100-thousand dollar fine earlier last month.

(Undated) — College football’s Championship Week has arrived. The action kicks off Friday with four conference title games across the country. The day will be headlined by Number-20 Tulane hosts 24th-ranked North Texas in the American Championship in New Orleans. The winner of that game is expected to lock up a spot in the College Football Playoff. Elsewhere, Number-25 James Madison plays host to Troy in the Sun Belt Championship. There will then be a handful of games Saturday between several high-profile programs. Top-ranked Ohio State will face second-ranked Indiana in the Big Ten title game, third-ranked Georgia faces ninth-ranked Alabama in the SEC Championship, fourth-ranked Texas Tech challenges Number-11 BYU in the Big 12 Championship, and Number-17 Virginia plays Duke in the ACC Championship.

(Birmingham, AL) — UAB has decided on who will be its next head football coach. ESPN reports that the school is making Alex Mortensen its permanent head coach. Mortensen served as the Blazers’ interim head coach for the final six games of the season, going 2-and-4 during that time. The 40-year-old took over for Trent Dilfer after the school fired him on October 12th. Mortensen had been UAB’s offensive coordinator since 2023. He is the son of the late award-winning ESPN NFL Insider Chris Mortensen.

(Harrisonburg, VA) — A former SEC head coach is taking over a new program. ESPN is reporting that James Madison is set to hire former Florida coach Billy Napier to a five-year deal as the program’s next head football coach. Napier has previous experience in the Sun Belt conference after going 40-and-12 and appearing in four conference title games while coaching Louisiana from 2018-to-2021. He was fired by Florida in October after going 22-and-23 in four seasons in Gainesville. The 46-year-old will replace Bob Chesney, who is departing Harrisonburg to take over at UCLA following the team’s Sun Belt championship game and potential College Football Playoff appearance.

(Orlando, FL) — Major League Baseball’s Hot Stove hits a fever pitch this weekend as the Winter Meetings are set to get underway. The event begins Sunday in Orlando, bringing the baseball world together for the final time before pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training. On Sunday, the Hall of Fame’s Contemporary Baseball Era Committee will meet to discuss and vote on the potential induction of eight players, including Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens. Players must receive at least 12 of the 16 votes to be inducted. Also during the week, the draft lottery will be held, as will the Rule 5 Draft.

ESPN reports the team acquired Johan Oviedo from the Pirates in exchange for top outfield prospect Jhostynxon Garcia [[ JOES-tin-son ]]. Three other players were part of the trade. Oviedo made nine starts for the Bucs last season and recorded an ERA near three-point-six in just over 40 innings pitched.

(San Francisco, CA) — The Giants are adding a former longtime manager to their coaching staff. Former Los Angeles Angels and Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington is joining San Francisco as the team’s new infield coach. The 73-year-old was hired to manage the Angels before the 2024 season but spent a large portion of this past season away from the team after undergoing quadruple bypass heart surgery. Washington has 763 wins as a manager and coached the Rangers to back-to-back World Series appearances in 2010 and 2011.
