Illinois State Police (ISP) Director Brendan F. Kelly gathered Friday with ISP staff, their families, local law enforcement, and members of the public for the agency’s annual Awards Ceremony, recognizing exceptional service and dedication to public safety throughout 2024. During the event, Director Kelly presented a series of the agency’s highest honors, including the Director’s Award of Distinction, Medal of Valor, Medal for Honor, Achievement Medal, Purple Heart Medal, Lifesaving Medal, and Meritorious Service Medal. Each award honored individuals whose actions demonstrated remarkable bravery, professionalism, and commitment to the residents of Illinois.
In addition to the major awards, eight ISP employees were recognized for exemplary service in their respective fields. Special honors included ISP Officer of the Year, Special Agent of the Year, Telecommunicator of the Year, Forensic Scientist of the Year, and Public Safety Support Staff Member of the Year. Among the honorees was Chris D. Miller, of Fairfield who was selected as the 2024 Public Safety Support Staff Member of the Year.
Miller’s 27-year career with ISP was marked by dedication, technical excellence, and strong leadership. As Bureau Chief of the Radio Network Services Bureau, he oversaw critical communications operations with professionalism and expertise. Even after retiring, Miller continued to volunteer his time to assist ISP through a significant transition, highlighting his deep commitment to the agency.
Miller also played a key role in coordinating radio communication efforts for the Democratic National Convention, ensuring seamless, secure multi-agency communication during one of the year’s largest and most complex public safety operations.
His contributions have strengthened ISP’s communications infrastructure, supported the development of countless colleagues, and fostered strong inter-division partnerships—leaving a lasting impact on the department.
Miller retired from the Illinois State Police on December 31, 2024. He now serves as the Transportation Director for Fairfield Community High School and is the Assistant Chief of the Fairfield Rural Fire Department.
