On Sunday, the FCHS Mules Competition Cheerleading Squad participated in the Pinckneyville ICCA Invitational. The Mules squad earned 1st place in the 1A Small Varsity Game Day Division. The win also qualifies them for the ICCA State Championships in Springfield on January 11th.

On Friday, Cisne High School Volleyball player, Ava Greifzu, announced that she had signed with St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in Terre Haute, Indiana to continue her academic and athletic career.

The St. Louis Blues picked up their second straight win with a 4-3 victory over the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre. Dylan Holloway tied the game with a goal in the first minute of the second period before Pavel Buchnevich knocked in a go-ahead score less than 40 seconds later. Brayden Schenn added a pair of goals and an assist in the win. St. Louis is tied for sixth place in the Central Division with 29 points. They host the Bruins tomorrow night.

The Chicago Blackhawks allowed four goals in the second period of a 7-1 loss to the Anaheim Ducks at Honda Center. The Hawks gave up the first six goals of the game before Tyler Bertuzzi finally lit the lamp in the third period. Chicago is in fifth place in the Central Division with 30 points. The Blackhawks host the Rangers on Wednesday night.

(Nashville, TN) — The number-15 Illinois Fighting Illini dominated the second half of their 75-62 win over number-13 Tennessee at Bridgestone Arena on Saturday. The Illini trailed by two entering the second half before outscoring the Vols 43-28 the rest of the way. Keaton Wagler and Tomislav Ivisic each scored 16 points in the victory. The 7-and-2 Illini begin Big Ten play with a game at Ohio State tomorrow night.

The Steelers took down the Ravens 27-22 from Baltimore to reclaim first place in the AFC North while the Packers edged the Bears 28-21 at Lambeau Field to overtake Chicago for the top spot in the NFC North. The Jaguars are kings of the AFC South following a 36-19 beatdown of the Colts from Jacksonville. Meanwhile, the Rams blew out the Cardinals 45-17 on the road to maintain their NFC West lead while the Broncos bullied the Raiders 24-17 from Vegas to stay first in the AFC West. According to ESPN, Jones suffered a torn Achilles and is set to undergo season-ending surgery. Backup Anthony Richardson Sr. remains on injured reserve due to a fractured orbital bone.

(Pittsburgh, PA) — The Steelers need to make a tough decision on their head coach sooner rather than later. ESPN reports the team must decide on Mike Tomlin’s future by March. The coach has an option in his contract that needs to be picked up by then. Meetings among the front office and ownership will take place once the season ends as Pittsburgh sits first in the AFC North after taking down the Ravens.

(Orlando, FL) — Major League Baseball’s Winter Meetings got underway in Florida on Sunday. On the first day of the festivities, the Contemporary Baseball Era elected Jeff Kent to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Kent is the all-time leader for home runs among second basemen with 377 in his 17 big league seasons with the Blue Jays, Mets, Indians, Giants, Astros and Dodgers. Kent received 14 of a possible 16 votes. In other news, the Red Sox, Tigers and Rays are among the teams that have expressed interest in acquiring Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte in a trade. Marte has been an All-Star in each of the past two seasons with Arizona.

Jeff Kent will be inducted into the Hall next year after being named on 14 of 16 ballots by the contemporary baseball era committee. The 57-year-old is a former MVP, five-time All-Star and four-time Silver Slugger that played 17 years in the majors with the San Francisco Giants, New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, Houston Astros, Toronto Blue Jays and Cleveland Indians. He hit 377 home runs and had over 15-hundred RBIs throughout his career. Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Don Mattingly, Dale Murphy and Gary Sheffield did not receive enough votes for induction.

(Dallas, TX) — The Texas Rangers and Dallas Stars are mourning the loss of their former owner. Texas businessman and philanthropist Tom Hicks died Saturday. He was 79. Hicks owned the Stars from 1995-to-2011 and the Rangers from 1998-to-2010. He also acquired a 50-percent stake in English Premier League soccer team Liverpool in 2007. He co-founded Hicks & Haas in 1984 and helped to reshape private equity and investing strategy. He is survived by his wife and six children.

(New York, NY) — Jack Eichel scored with eight seconds left in overtime to give the Golden Knights a 3-2 win over the Rangers. Brett Howden scored in the first period and Tomas Hertl tied the game with under a minute to go before Eichel won it in the extra frame. Carter Hart allowed two goals on 23 shots in net. The Golden Knights have won four straight games to improve to 14-6-and-8 this season. Mika Zibanejad and Alexis Lafreniere lit the lamp in the second period for New York in the setback. Jonathan Quick stopped 26 of the 29 shots he faced. The Rangers have dropped back-to-back games to fall to 15-12-and-4 on the year.

The Buckeyes slipped to second and are followed by Georgia and Texas Tech. The top four teams receive a bye in the first round, which begins Friday, December 19th when Oklahoma hosts Alabama. The opening round concludes the following day when Texas A and M hosts Miami, Ole Miss hosts Tulane, and Oregon hosts James Madison.

Notre Dame dropped from ten to 11, and the Irish responded with athletic director Pete Bevacqua calling the committee a farce. Furthermore, Notre Dame declined its bowl game invitation, effectively ending its 2025 season.
